He said he hopes improved U.N. and ASEAN coordination with the authorities in Burma (also known as Myanmar) will help scale up relief efforts quickly. My aim in going to Myanmar is to first of all, to demonstrate my sympathy to the people and government at this time of crisis and challenge, and to see for myself the situation on the ground, particularly in areas most affected by the disaster, unprecedented in Myanmar's history," he said. The secretary-general said the devastation to the country is estimated at over billion and that other factors, such as a not being able to plant the next harvest, could compound the crisis even further. The cyclone has aly claimed over 78,000 lives. In this sense, the economic effects of the natural disaster that has struck Myanmar could be more severe and longer lasting than the 2004 tsunami," he noted. Mr. Ban will be in Burma on Thursday and Friday. He welcomed what he called the military regime's "recent flexibility" in deciding to allow Asian aid workers under ASEAN auspices into the country to oversee aid supplies and distribution, and said he believes similar moves will follow. Diplomats, attending meetings at the U.N. in New York this week, welcomed Mr. Ban's trip. U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Zalmay Khalilzad, said that for the secretary-general's trip to be successful he must focus on winning access for experts and supplies. And aly thousands of warriors and some 10,000 weapons have been discovered. Look closely at the faces, each one is different. The Terracotta Army was sculpted from its real-life counterpart. The army is drawn up in battle formation. At the rear, a command post of senior generals give commands. Their age and status shown by their sping waistlines. In all, it took almost 700,000 men 38 years to complete the construction of Emperor Qin's tomb. Once China was united, and he had reorganized his empire, Qin sent 300,000 soldiers to the northern frontier to drive back the ever- threatening nomads. When their job was done, Qin ordered his army to stay. And with an extra half a million peasants, they built the first Great Wall of China. The wall was made with compressed earth. It's a technique still used every day in the Chinese countryside. First, wooden planks are laid parallel to one another as wide apart as the wall's thickness, then earth is shoveled between the planks, watered and packed down by human feet. Then the planks are built upwards, and the wall continues to grow layer by layer. It is a cheap and fast way to make a wall. A hundred times easier, it has been calculated, than building with stone. That's how Qin built 4,000 miles of wall in just 12 years. Surprisingly, these walls can last a very long time. The walls of this ancient city are nearly 2,000 years old, preserved by the extreme dryness of the Gobi Desert's climate. The wall protected China but it took a terrible toll on its people. Millions of men died of exhaustion while working on the wall. Some say the dead were used as mortar and buried in it. They said that the bones of the dead were so numerous, it turned the mortar of the wall white. No one escaped the terrible rule of the Emperor Qin. Every peasant paid his taxes and contributed to the growing wealth of his empire. The greatness of China was built on the backs of the poor. And the history of the Qin Dynasty is laced with tales of sadness. There is a fairy tale in China as well-known to the Chinese as the story of Snow White or Robin Hood is to us.real-life: existing or occurring in realitydrive back: repel, repulse, ward off, resist200707/15844泉州市第一人民医院不孕专家

It's a very good buildup toward these kinds of Games and the Championships," said Okeyo. Kenya is to host the Africa Championship games in two years in Nairobi. Okeyo says in anticipation, Kenya is working hard on the sprints and field events. Ethiopia also did well in the long distance races. Team leader Thabani Gonye called it a major accomplishment given the small size of the Zimbabwean team. We only brought a team of 13 athletes, for swimming, track and field, cycling, rowing and tennis," said Gonye. "So when we look in terms of people that we have brought we feel as a nation we put up a fairly commendable performance." He added that two younger members placed fourth in the men's long jump and 200-meter race and said he expected further improvements as the younger athletes mature. Other gold medal winners included Cameroon, in the women's triple jump, and Tunisia, in the men's 1500-meter swimming (freestyle) race. Besides Morocco's second-place finish in the men's marathon, South Africa won a silver medal in the men's long jump. Relations recently worsened when the Afghan government accused Pakistan's security and intelligence agencies of plotting attacks inside Afghanistan including an assassination attempt against President Karzai. Mr. Karzai said Mr. Zardari's election signaled a new era that gives him hope. I found in President Zardari a good will and vision not only for relations between the two countries but for the region - which I have seen for the first time in the leadership of this region," he said. Mr. Zardari assumes office with the same expanded powers that former President Pervez Musharraf had bestowed on the presidency, but it is unclear how much influence the new president has over Pakistan's powerful military and intelligence agencies. Nevertheless, the president said a civilian-led government that had a mandate from the people would be better able to conduct the war against terrorism. Yesterday's war may not have had the people behind it," Mr. Zardari said. "But today's war does have the people of Pakistan - in fact, it has the president of Pakistan, who himself is a victim of terrorism." U.S. and NATO airstrikes in Afghanistan, and suspected U.S. missile attacks in Pakistan, are routinely blamed for killing innocent civilians. Mr. Karzai said ending strikes on civilians is essential to maintaining public support for the war. The war against terrorism will only be won if we have the people with us," he said. "There is no other way. Therefore, for us to have the people with us, we must avoid civilian casualties." Mr. Zardari takes office at a time of increased international attention on the war in Afghanistan, and increased worry about Taliban and al-Qaida militants based in Pakistan's lawless tribal areas. Within Pakistan, he faces daunting economic problems as well as a public that remains suspicious about the influence of billions of dollars in U.S. aid to Pakistan's military and government. Asif Zardari said that, similar to most countries around the world, Pakistan would continue to accept foreign aid. As far as America is concerned - the fact that we are in the eye of the storm, I consider that an opportunity," he said. "I intend to take that and make it a strength. We intend to take the world with us in developing the future of Pakistan and changing the future of our neighbors also." In Washington, a State Department spokesman said the ed States looks forward to working with Mr. Zardari and the Pakistani government on counterterrorism.
