Asian markets showing strength For some investors, Asian market reaction to Wall Street's tumble is worth watching. CNN's Hugh Riminton reports.Asian markets opened with a predictable plunge and blunt predictions on the streets. I think we are gonna have big financial problems for at least two years.Banks took the early pressure, Australia’s Prime Minister going public to address investors. Australia’s major banks which represent 85% of the Australian banking system, uh, that these are in good order, that they are weathering the financial crisis well. If I will regulate it, and I will capitalize it, that remains its situation. With a late hit to commodity stocks, Australia finished down more than 4%, as did Japan. We investors in Japan think the financial trouble in the US links so strongly to us, we won’t get in a positive mindset until an emergency bailout planned is forth through. But so found some resilience through bank on short selling, and Hong Kong bounced back. In Hong Kong, one seasoned trader says the market is still rating it a 50-50 chance that Congress will still salvage a bailout bill, implication of that is that if they don’t, these markets still have further to fall. But after the Hang Seng index tumbled 5% in the first 5 minutes, Hong Kong’s oldest working trader was seeing up some. Do you think this is a buying opportunity?Very good, the opportunity to buy …The market agreed, recouping all of those lost early losses to close the day ahead, the only market in Asia to do so. So has Asia now shown a fundamental strength? Some believe it has.Asian banking system in the last 12 months have not needed to be supported, nationalized, injected, or privatized or otherwise interfered with either by the central banks or the Asian governments. The Asian banking systems are absolutely sound, alive and kicking. Maybe, but would you put your house …Hugh Riminton, CNN, Hong Kong.200810/54020语言能力的高低和老年性痴呆症的发生有什么关系呢? Researchers followed a small group of Catholic nuns, testing them for any signs of memory problems. After their death, their brains were examined for the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. However, some with signs of Alzheimer’s in their brains had not shown any signs of memory difficulties. The researchers next analyzed essays that many of the participants had written when they were around 20 years old. They found that the language was far more complex in the group of women without memory problems. The researchers conclude that superior language skills early in life may predict the brain’s ability to cope with early stages of Alzheimer’s disease decades later, due to differences in mental reserves.07/77231

US Expects "Difficult" Beijing Talks on North Korean Disarmament美国预计北韩无核化会谈将很艰难 The U.S. State Department said it expects a meeting in Beijing next week on ending North Korea's nuclear program to be difficult, but that no consideration is being given to scrapping the six-party talks. The senior U.S. delegate to the talks Friday ended a two day set of preparatory meetings in Singapore with his North Korean counterpart. Officials at the U.S. State Department said the Chinese- sponsored meeting due to begin Monday will likely be no less difficult than previous meetings on the North Korean nuclear program. But they said even though China has yet to officially announce the meeting, they do expect the six-party session to go forward as planned. All six heads of delegations to the long-running talks are to convene in Beijing to approve a verification plan for the declaration of its nuclear holdings and activities North Korea made last June. Approval of a verification protocol is to open the way to the final phase of the intricate agreement reached last year, under which North Korea is to eventually scrap its nuclear program, including weapons, in return for energy aid and diplomatic benefits from the other parties. The latest snag in the process involves whether disarmament inspectors can remove samples from North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear complex for outside analysis. Chief U.S. delegate Christopher Hill said North Korea agreed to sampling, at least verbally, in talks in Pyongyang in July. The North Koreans later said they made no such commitment. Hill, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian Affairs, met in Singapore with his North Korean counterpart Kim Kye-Gwan. Both said Friday they had extensive discussions on verification issues but did not indicate they had reached a final agreement. At a news briefing here, Deputy State Department Spokesman Robert Wood said that would be the goal of the six-way meeting, which will include South Korea, Russia and Japan, along with the ed States, North Korea and host China: Really where we are now is trying to get those understandings and assurances that the North Koreans provided Chris [Hill], in addition to those understandings on verification, to get all of this on paper and codified at the six-party heads of delegation meeting. So the negotiations on that will take place in Beijing and hopefully we will have a final verification protocol after that meeting," said Wood. Both Wood and North Korean envoy Kim in Singapore said there was no reason why the Beijing meeting should not go forward, despite the lack of an official announcement. Wood said Assistant Secretary Hill will go to Seoul on Saturday and then on to Beijing Sunday where he will consult with the Japanese, Chinese, South Korean and Russian envoys on the eve of the opening of the six-way meeting. Their discussions will also cover a delivery schedule for heavy fuel oil committed to North Korea in return for the disablement of the Yongbyon reactor complex. North Korea has slowed the disablement process, saying that nearly half the one million tons of fuel it has been promised has not been delivered.Japan has refused to join other parties in providing oil, because it said Pyongyang has not fully accounted for Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea agents in the 1980's.200812/58063

Hunger in North Korea朝鲜的饥荒Let them eat maize husks让他们吃玉米皮The politics of hunger in a brutal place野蛮之地的饥荒政治May 12th 2011 | SEOUL | from the print editionIT IS the time of year when the previous harvest has been nearly eaten and the next one has just been planted. Time, in other words, to worry about North Korea’s perennially hungry masses. North Korea had long grown dependent on food handouts from its estranged brother, South Korea, and from the ed States. But the South’s current president, Lee Myung-bak, has taken a tougher line, tying assistance to less provocative behaviour by Kim Jong Il’s nuclear-tipped regime. So Mr Kim’s envoys have travelled further afield of late, reportedly doing the rounds of Europe. The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) is now preparing to distribute emergency aid to 3.5m North Koreans suffering from “severe malnutrition”. Programme officials are concerned about the possibility of a famine on the scale of the one in the mid-1990s, in which over 1m died. They blame a series of shocks, including the coldest winter in years, widesp flooding and an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease among livestock. Some 297,000 tonnes of cereal and 137,000 tonnes of fortified blended food must reach the most vulnerable. 201105/137233
