The judge, by the way, was the King; and as he wore his crown over the wig, (look at the frontispiece if you want to see how he did it,) he did not look at all comfortable, and it was certainly not becoming. `And that's the jury-box,' thought Alice, `and those twelve creatures,' (she was obliged to say `creatures,' you see, because some of them were animals, and some were birds,) `I suppose they are the jurors.' She said this last word two or three times over to herself, being rather proud of it: for she thought, and rightly too, that very few little girls of her age knew the meaning of it at all. However, `jury-men' would have done just as well. The twelve jurors were all writing very busily on slates. `What are they doing?' Alice whispered to the Gryphon. `They can't have anything to put down yet, before the trial's begun.' The.Turn.of.the.

I realized that all those feelings of fear and apprehension I had stemmed from her hating me and him leering at me. My boyfriend agreed. He said that the male ghost was always watching me. He also said that he went into the bathroom the first night and had a "talk" with the ghosts in the bathroom mirror to leave me alone, as I did not understand the spirit world as he did. I guess that just egged them on, considering how much they focused on screwing with me. As I look back now, I feel pretty stupid for staying two whole days when I felt so weird. I guess I thought that it was all in my imagination. I'm a little angry with my ex, too. He should have said something. At least I would have known that I wasn't crazy. Article/200905/71082

How did all the planets get there? How is it only our planet has life? Will we ever travel to other planets? These are questions I often think about. I think our planet is the best. It looks so beautiful from space with its mixture of blue and green. The other planets look too strange to me. Mercury is just a red, hot ball, pretty much the same as Mars. Saturn looks like a real planet. Its rings give it an extra-special look. The other planets don’t look that interesting. I don’t really know much about Venus, Neptune, Uranus and Jupiter. When I was at school, we learnt that Pluto was a planet. But now it isn’t. Scientists have decided there are now only eight planets in our solar system and not nine. I wonder why they dropped Pluto. `That's the most important piece of evidence we've heard yet,' said the King, rubbing his hands; `so now let the jury--' `If any one of them can explain it,' said Alice, (she had grown so large in the last few minutes that she wasn't a bit afraid of interrupting him,) `I'll give him sixpence. _I_ don't believe there's an atom of meaning in it.' The jury all wrote down on their slates, `SHE doesn't believe there's an atom of meaning in it,' but none of them attempted to explain the paper. `If there's no meaning in it,' said the King, `that saves a world of trouble, you know, as we needn't try to find any. And yet I don't know,' he went on, sping out the verses on his knee, and looking at them with one eye; `I seem to see some meaning in them, after all. "--SAID I COULD NOT SWIM--" you can't swim, can you?' he added, turning to the Knave. The Knave shook his head sadly. `Do I look like it?' he said. (Which he certainly did NOT, being made entirely of cardboard.) `All right, so far,' said the King, and he went on muttering over the verses to himself: `"WE KNOW IT TO BE TRUE--" that's the jury, of course-- "I GAVE HER ONE, THEY GAVE HIM TWO--" why, that must be what he did with the tarts, you know--' `But, it goes on "THEY ALL RETURNED FROM HIM TO YOU,"' said Alice. 英文原著:永别了武器PDF文本下载 Article/200912/91021

PART THREE - A YOUNG WOMAN AT THORNFIELDCHAPTER TWELVEThe GypsyMr. Rochester's face went white. For a few minutes, he did not speak. Finally I asked, "are you ill, sir?""Jane, help me," he said. I helped him to sit down, and then sat next to him. He held my hand tightly."Jane, I wish you and I were far away from here, with none of these terrible troubles to make me suffer.""How can I help you, sir? Pleas tell me what is wrong!""Jane, I promise I'll ask you if I need help, but I cannot tell you anything now. Get me a glass of [-----1-----], please." I did what he asked. He looked less pale, but very [-----2-----].After a while he spoke. "Jane, if all those fine ladies and gentlemen out there came and called me terrible names, what would you do?" he asked."If I could, I'd make them leave the house.""Or, if they only looked at me, and then said terrible things about me when I could not hear, and then left me alone in the house?""I wouldn't leave you. I'd stay with you and [-----3-----] you, sir.""And if it seemed like the whole world was against me, would you still stay with me?""Sir, if you deserved my friendship I wouldn't care what other people thought.""Thank you, Jane. I would like to see Mr. Mason now." After I found Mr. Mason and left the two men talking in the library, I went to bed, wondering about Mr. Rochester's strange, serious questions. Some time later, I heard him walking with Mr. Mason to his bedroom, and I was glad that Mr. Rochester sounded happier. 填空 :1.wine2.stern3.comfortVocabulary Focuswith none of these terrible troubles to make me suffer: with引导的不定式断语,表伴随。例如:He did this research with nobody to consult.(他自己搞这项研究,没有人可以去请教。) Article/200905/68783“People have been traveling by car for 100 years. My invention is long overdue. Who hasn’t had an emergency while traveling? Sometimes you’re miles from the nearest gas station or McDonald’s. Everyone knows that when you gotta go, you gotta go,” said Phil Bole.Phil has invented a chemical toilet for vehicles. One size fits all (vehicles and people). It is made from recycled materials. It never smells bad, he claims. Between uses, it can be stored in the trunk. When the toilet is full, an adult or child can compress it into the size of a bowling ball. The waste matter in the toilet is continuously being absorbed by chemicals and bacteria. Eventually, all the waste matter turns into a pile of dry crumbs. The toilet can be dropped into any trash can at any time.Phil tested his invention while on a two-week vacation with his wife and four young kids. He said that the kids loved it. His wife didn’t.“Nothing on Earth could make me use that disgusting thing!” she told him. He pleaded with her, saying that he had invented the toilet primarily for women and kids. He needed a woman’s blessing so the toilet would sell. “No woman would ever use this thing!” she responded.“My wife’s sort of a prude,” Phil said one day to Bret, his mechanic. After much thought, Phil finally figured out how to make his wife love his invention: he made a pink toilet covered with yellow flowers. “What more could a woman want?” he asked while showing it to Bret. Bret said it was a beautiful and a practical gift. And since his wife's birthday was the following week, Bret ordered a toilet. "Your wife will remember this birthday forever!" Phil promised Bret. By William RogersBroadcast: January 23, 2005 ANNCR:People in America, a program in Special English on the Voice of America. (Theme)Today, Shep O'Neal and Warren Scheer finish the story of civil right's leader, Reverend Martin Luther King, Junior. (THEME)VOICE ONE:Martin Luther King was born in Atlanta, Georgia, in nineteen twenty-nine. He began his university studies when he was fifteen years old, and received a doctorate degree in religion. He became a preacher at a church in Montgomery, Alabama. In nineteen fifty-five, a black woman in Montgomery was arrested for sitting in the white part of a city bus. Doctor King became the leader of a protest against the city bus system. It was the first time that black southerners had united against the laws of racial separation. VOICE TWO:At first, the white citizens of Montgomery did not believe that the protest would work. They thought most blacks would be afraid to fight against racial separation. But the buses remained empty. Some whites used tricks to try to end the protest. They sp false stories about Martin Luther King and other protest leaders. One story accused Martin of stealing money from the civil rights movement. Another story charged that protest leaders rode in cars while other protesters had to walk. But the tricks did not work, and the protest continued. VOICE ONE:Doctor King's wife Coretta described how she and her husband felt during the protest. She said:"We never knew what was going to happen next. We felt like actors in a play whose ending we did not know. Yet we felt a part of history. And we believed we were instruments of the will of God". The white citizens blamed Doctor King for starting the protest. They thought it would end if he was in prison or dead. Doctor King was arrested twice on false charges. His arrests made national news and he was released. But the threats against his life continued. Listening is the easiest English skill for me. I can understand about half of what people say to me. This means I can guess the things I don’t understand. Listening to the English of my American friends is not so difficult. I have problems when I try and understand the news on television. I also find movies hard to follow. I need the subtitles at the bottom of the screen. I think listening to songs in English made my listening better. It’s a lot more interesting than my listening CDs. I have one piece of advice for students who want to improve their listening. That is to listen to the same thing again and again. You understand more every time you listen. What’s your advice?
