Since the early days of the game industry, consoles have ruled the home. Companies like Nintendo, Sega, Sony and Microsoft MSFT -1.11% thrived by building closed ecosystems that developers could creates games over the course of five to 10 years before a new, more powerful box entered the market and the cycle began all over again. But ever since the introduction of smartphones from companies like Apple AAPL -1.31% , Nokia, Samsung, LG, Google and Amazon AMZN -1.02% , game creators have flocked to these powerful mobile devices and an entire ecosystem of small and independent development studios have flourished (also in part thanks to the digital distribution networks on new consoles from Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft). In recent years, this marriage between smartphone (and tablet) and the traditional game console has resulted in micro-console devices like Ouya, Mad Catz M.O.J.O., Nvidia Shield and Amazon Fire TV. With Google’s GOOG -1.04% entry into this space this fall with Android TV, game developers will be able to create cross-platform experiences that will begin to compete more directly with the traditional console manufacturers. Chris McKillop, Android TV engineering manager, explains how this new technology could forever change the game. Fortune: What are your thoughts on the speed at which new technology from companies like Nvidia has impacted the gaming capabilities of Android smartphones and tablets?《财富》杂志:英伟达公司(Nvidia)这类芯片企业的新技术影响了安卓智能手机和平板电脑的游戏能力。 McKillop:It’s incredible. The latest generation of GPUs in Mobile SoCs are now at or exceeding those of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. When the PS3 originally launched, Android was still nearly two years away from a 1.0. It’s not going to take long for the mobile chipsets to catch up with the current fourth-generation systems (PlayStation 4 and Xbox One). How have you seen mobile game experiences advance over the years on Google Play? Mobile game experiences have made big strides on Google Play. Android is all about the ecosystem, and moving an ecosystem forward happens over time. It started with the NDK in 2009 and now with the upcoming Android Extension Pack for PC class gaming in L release. I don’t see any limit to what game developers can bring to Android. As the broader handset and tablet space start having CPUs and GPUs that can provide great high definition gaming, there is a big incentive for developers to be on Google Play. Google Play。What opportunities has Android opened up for game developers, especially smaller teams? There are a lot of small shops (sometimes just one developer) doing great work. Since Google Play Store has such a quick turnaround time for developers to publish updates and new games, it makes it easier for smaller shops to have a bigger impact. Another element is free-to-play gaming. How do you see Android TV impacting the current game ecosystem, which is tiered separately (for the most part) across mobile, console and PC games? Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to discuss this with game developers across all three of these spaces. Mobile developers are excited to have more screens running Android. I don’t think we know yet exactly how the console players will come to the space but, as Android TV grows, it’s a question that will have to be answered. We have some ideas, and I’m excited about the next couple of years as they come to life. What differentiates the big-screen gaming experience from the mobile experience today? Input system and power. Mobile experiences are almost always touchscreen-based and battery operated. Once you hit the living room, developers are going to see gamepads and remote controls, and the systems will be plugged into a wall so the chipset can run faster for longer. For some developers, it will be the first time they have had to think about non-touch gaming. For others, it will be like going back in time. Prior to the upcoming L release, Android hadn’t set down a standard for button mappings and how Gamepads should work. This made it really hard for developers to target controllers, so they either did one-off development for a single brand or just ignored controllers altogether. Android TV will give them a reason to get controllers working, and this will translate directly to controller gaming on phones and tablets. That’s the power of a single platform across all form factors. How do you see micro-consoles like Android TV changing that? Android TV is much more than just a system for micro-consoles, it’s all about bringing Android to the big screen in your living room — either built into your TV, cable STB, media streamer or micro-console. Having a standard platform for all of these devices is going to have the same impact in the living room that having a standard platform for mobile devices has had on the mobile industry since 2008. It’s going to be a big win for developers and consumers and raise the overall expectations of everyone involved. How have you worked with Nvidia on Android TV? We have worked very closely with Nvidia (they are at the heart of the ADT-1). The folks at Nvidia really “get” gaming and gamers — it’s in their DNA. They have helped us work with game developers, as well as optimize graphics performance on the developer devices we gave away at Google IO. We also work with GPU vendors across the industry, including Qualcomm ARM, Intel, etc. What does Tegra K1 technology open up for game experiences? It brings third-generation console and PC-class gaming to mobile and small living room devices. We did a demo with Nvidia and the folks at Epic Games with Unreal Engine 4 at Google IO to show off what’s going to be possible. How do you see game developers creating titles across mobile devices and Android TV when it comes to the touchscreen versus physical controller? In an ideal world a game should operate both ways equally. Since the physical controllers for Android TV devices will also work with phones and tablets, the investment for developers will be across all devices. Most of the games on the Preview Play Store for Android TV are the same ones you install on your phone or tablet. I can see a lot of kids carrying a tablet and two gamepads to school next year. How does technology like Unreal Engine 4 open up new opportunities for cross-device and cross-platform gaming experiences?“虚幻引擎4”这样的技术会如何给跨设备及跨平台的游戏体验带来新机遇?When a game developer invests in something like Unreal Engine 4 for the core of their experience, it broadens the market they can address with a lower incremental cost. Couple this with a system like Google Play Games Services, and you can really do some fun things with cross-platform, multi-device and multi-user gaming. How do you see the actual gameplay experiences evolving with the ability to play on the road and then continue on the big screen at home? Most games have a cloud-based solution, like Play Games Services, for save game state so you don’t lose your progress if you get a new phone. Since we are using the same core platform for Android TV, all the same technologies continue to work. Developers love that if you buy a game on your TV, it’s installable on your phone and vice-versa. You will see us investing heavily in these sort of cross-device experiences going forward. One of the current challenges facing game developers on Android is the sheer number of different devices. How do you see a unified platform like Android TV making things easier for developers to focus on creativity versus ports? We have CPU and GPU performance requirement built into the Android TV spec. We want game developers to know that even on the low-end devices they are going to have room to play. There will always be devices that perform well beyond these specs, and there will always be game developers that want to take advantage of those capabilities when they are present. This looks a lot like the PC gaming space, and it is a model that has worked well for years. I think game developers are going to be pretty happy with this approach. Given the speed at which we’ve seen technology, including the Tegra line of chips, advance over the last few years, how do you see more advanced and complex games impacting the traditional console business dominated by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo? Technology always ends up disrupting existing industries. You just need to look at the mobile space and compare the big players in 2006 with the big players in 2014 to see this in action. I don’t think that the living room will be any different, but it’s impossible to predict the winners and losers. Let’s look back in five to six years. How have you worked with actual game developers in creating Android TV? We started reaching out to select game developers almost a year ago and disclosed our plans with close partners. We also worked closely with Nvidia and their existing Nvidia Shield developers to get their apps y for a non-touch world. Probably one of the best parts of building Android TV has been how positive and supportive the various game developers have been around our efforts. Android has an incredible Developer Relations team that is filled with avid gamers. Blythe Masters, a pioneer of credit derivatives, one of the products at the heart of the financial crisis, has resigned from JPMorgan Chase after more than two decades at the bank. Ms Masters, 45, was at the vanguard of the development of credit derivatives in the 1990s, credited with the creation of a new risk mitigation tool but after the crisis vilified as an architect of “weapons of mass destruction”.45岁的马斯特斯在上世纪90年代曾是开发信用衍生品的先驱,她因创造了一种新的风险缓解工具而闻名于世。 Her friends say it was a caricature: Ms Masters developed but did not invent the product and stopped working in the area years before derivatives on mortgage securities stoked the market meltdown in 2008, though she did later act as an industry advocate. The departure of one of the most prominent women on Wall Street was announced in an internal memo from Jamie Dimon, chief executive, and Daniel Pinto, head of the investment bank. Facebook accused of restricting its usersIs Facebook monopolising(垄断) the social networking market? That is the claim levelled in a lawsuit(诉讼) filed on Friday by Power.com, a fledgling (幼鸟,无经验的)website that lets users interact on multiple social networks. Users of Facebook put work into developing their profiles(简介,概况). They upload pictures, put in their phone numbers and e-mail addresses, and connect with friends who have done the same. For those with hundreds of friends, Facebook becomes a rich personal directory(人名地址簿).But once that information is on Facebook, it is impossible to get it off. Users cannot export their own photos, or even a contact list of their friends, much less move that information to another site. The lawsuit, filed in the US district court of northern California, is a response to a suit Facebook filed against Power.com in December. Power.com alleges(宣称) that Facebook restricts users and stifles (遏制)competition, and is in violation of California’s unfair competition laws and US antitrust(反垄断) laws.“They’re blocking users from accessing their data freely,” said Steve Vachani, Power.com chief executive. “And they are blocking companies that are trying to innovate around their service.”Facebook sued Power.com for “scraping” data off its site and storing the user names and passwords of users who tried to access their Facebook accounts through Power.com, in violation of Facebook’s terms of service. At issue is “data portability(数据可携带性)”, the ability for users to take their information from one website to another freely. Facebook has been criticised for flouting(藐视) this freedom, and preventing users from interacting with the broader web.But while Facebook does not allow users to export their contacts to other sites, it has begun to work with groups that advocate(主张) open standards. It has joined the Data Portability Project, which promotes open information standards, and is on the board of the OpenID Foundation, which is working towards a universal login system.Through a new service, Facebook Connect, it allows users to log in and interact on more than 10,000 other sites.“They’re doing everything they can to be open while remaining closed,” said Marc Canter, chief executive of Broadband Mechanics and an expert on data portability. On Friday, Facebook said Power.com’s charges were baseless(毫无根据的). “We have made numerous attempts to work with Power.com but, after making commitments to comply with our policies, they continued to put Facebook user data at risk,” it said.“The claims asserted by Power.com in its countersuit are without merit and we will fight them aggressively.”Power.com, which was founded in Brazil, has funding from venture capitalist firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson. After it launched to a positive reception last year, traffic to the site fell off a cliff. Just 14,000 people in the US visited Power.com last month, according to analytics(分析学) firm Compete.Facebook’s restrictive data portability standards might be inconvenient to some. But proving that these practices are illegal could be very difficult. There are no good legal precedents(引用单元) to call upon, and Facebook’s terms of service, which all users tacitly agree to when using the site, essentially grant Facebook licence to restrict outside access to user data.“What Facebook is doing is not necessarily illegal,” said Mr Canter. But the issue of data portability was an important one, and he hoped Power.com would pursue the case because that would provide a forum to air issues of data portability and privacy.“They will have to go the long haul(持久), and it will be a multi-year case,” he said. “Otherwise it just looks like a publicity stunt(作秀).”Mr Vachani said Facebook’s restrictions on users’ data were comparable to wireless phone companies(无线电话公司) locking customers’ mobile phones and charging high termination fees. But that analogy(类比) goes only so far. Facebook does not charge its users any fees, and through Facebook Connect it is enabling people to interact with their Facebook friends on other sites.“A less contentious(引起争论的) but more analogous(可比拟的) comparison would be e-mail,” said Chris Saad, head of communications for the Data Portability Project(数据可移植性项目). “E-mail used to be a bunch of locked-in services; you couldn’t e-mail from one service to another. But the web wouldn’t have taken off if they didn’t start talking to one another.”The same is now true for companies such as Facebook as they work to develop the “social web”, an online world where a user’s friends can be with them everywhere they go online.“Ultimately, for social networking to be fully ingrained (牢固的)in the internet, no one company is going to own it,” Mr Saad said. “It’s going to be an inexorable(不可变更的) march towards openness.”Keke View:Facebook是一个社会化网络站点。 After decades living in the shadow of the West Coast’s more numerous and wealthier geeks, 2013 was the year New York City’s tech start-up community really found its swagger. Backing from City Hall and the metropolis’s first billion-dollar deal – Yahoo’s acquisition of Tumblr – built on several years of momentum to create a start-up community that is hoping to make up for what it lacks in deep technical capability with cultural and industrial diversity. Tumblr。Some Silicon Valley luminaries are aly starting to see New York as a better place to build tech start-ups – among other local perks. It’s a major point – they are happier people,” he said to nervous laughs from the assembled entrepreneurs. “In New York engineers go out and get laid and have fun.”“你们这里(指纽约)的工程师会少一些性压抑。 While Silicon Valley retains a dominant share of US tech deals, New York’s has been growing steadily (see chart), even though most of that funding was for early stage companies, suggesting the community will take some time to build real scale. “While still smaller than Silicon Valley, New York looks to be the only market with enough momentum to eventually (in the medium to long term) overtake Silicon Valley as a venture capital hub,” say analysts at CB Insights, a research consultancy. Rather than trying to out-geek Silicon Valley, New York entrepreneurs and investors say it can succeed as a tech hub because it sits alongside so many other sizeable industries, from finance and real estate to fashion and media, rather than just tech. After completing the Y Combinator accelerator programme in Silicon Valley in 2011, the founders of Codecademy, a site that teaches computer programming, moved back to New York.2011年在硅谷参加完Y Combinator创业孵化器项目后,Codecademy网站的创始人们回到了纽约,该网站教授电脑编程技能。“One of the primary considerations was that we aren’t designing a product for people in San Francisco,” says Zach Sims, chief executive of Codecademy, which now has 22 staff in New York. “As we try to build a product for a mainstream audience, it helps to be around mainstream people. Being surrounded with people from other industries allowed us to test our product.”“我们主要考虑的一个问题是,我们不是为旧金山人设计产品的,”Codecademy首席执行官扎克#8226;西姆斯(Zach Sims)表示,“我们正努力为主流用户设计产品,因此生活在主流人群中是有帮助的。 However, more of the traffic still goes the other way. The creators of photo app Frontback, backed by prominent New York investor Betaworks, moved from Brooklyn to San Francisco this autumn, for example, because its founders felt it was more likely to have longer-term success there. While Tumblr has remained in New York after its takeover, Yahoo’s buyout of the blogging site suggests that, like many up-and-coming start-up communities, the biggest “successes” are acquired by Silicon Valley giants rather than breaking out on their own. Some say that could change next year, with some online retailers such as Etsy, a marketplace for craft or handmade goods, and Rent the Runway, a members’ site that rents out designer dresses, tipped as potential IPO candidates. IPO。But other one-time darlings of New York’s online retail market have struggled to maintain momentum. Fab.com, which sells designer homewares, and Gilt Groupe, a luxury goods vendor, both suffered from consumer fatigue of Groupon-style flash sales sites, leading to staff cuts and management changes in the past six months. New York may have more sex appeal than the “monoculture” of Silicon Valley, but despite the recent progress of its tech community, Silicon Valley’s focus still seems to trump New York’s diversity when it comes to creating a sustained stream of local successes.

For much of the developed world, 2013 marked the beginning of a new technological era. More than half the people in North America, the UK, Japan, South Korea and the Nordic countries now own a smartphone, market researchers have concluded. By next year, the rest of western Europe will join that mobile majority. The rise of the smartphone has aly created new winners and losers in the consumer electronics market. According to a November estimate by analysts at US investment bank Canaccord Genuity, Apple and Samsung captured a “remarkable” 109 per cent (correct) of handset industry profits in the third quarter of 2013, a figure that makes sense only if the losses suffered by suppliers such as BlackBerry, Nokia and Taiwan’s HTC are counted as “negative profits”. But it is not just their mobile rivals’ earnings that Apple’s iPhone and Samsung’s Galaxy devices have gobbled up. Cameras, music and radio players, alarm clocks, navigation systems, even torches and compasses are now absorbed into a glowing screen. Yet as smartphones increase in sophistication, they are also enabling new categories of gadget that harness their always-on connection, sensors and processing power. Wearable technology, “smart home” devices such as lights and security systems, fitness trackers and even toys are all orbiting the smartphone, making connected devices one of 2013’s hottest gadget trends. As innovation in smartphones themselves starts to slow down, the platform that they are enabling is just getting started – even if analysts say mass-market adoption is still years away. “The nice thing about the internet of things is it’s not monolithic,” says Rob Chandhok, president of Qualcomm’s interactive platforms division, who predicts a “Cambrian explosion” of smart devices. “I expect wearables to be on a very fast cadence as form factors fall out.” Pebble, one of the best-known independent makers of smartwatches, which raised m on US-based crowdfunding platform Kickstarter last year, said in November that it had sold 190,000 watches in total – impressive for a start-up but hardly the sort of volume that would have Apple rushing its rumoured iWatch to market. As with most smartwatches, the Pebble mainly acts as a way to notify the wearer of incoming messages or other alerts from a Bluetooth-tethered smartphone. The September launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear marked a significant moment for the smartwatch market. Although the device has had mixed reviews, the endorsement of the form factor by the South Korean electronics group – coupled with persistent rumours that Google, Microsoft and others are all working on similar watches – signalled that smart watches may not be a niche for much longer. Even Casio’s G-Shock now has a Bluetooth connection to receive message notifications – and has the benefit of actually looking like a watch. At the same time as the Galaxy Gear was unveiled, Qualcomm launched the Toq, a smartwatch that uses its Mirasol screen to showcase the potential of the technology. Unlike the Gear, which needs charging every day and does not keep its watch face lit all the time, the Toq’s screen is always on and the battery lasts for several days. “Being able to do things at a glance is very powerful,” says Mr Chandhok. “I don’t want to replicate the smartphone, but I do want to use it to raise things above the noise level. Notification really only works when it’s at a glance.”“能够扫一眼就解决问题是非常有用的。” But Robert Brunner, partner at the design agency Ammunition Group, which works on products such as Beats by Dr Dre headphones, says the appearance of these devices is just as important as what they do. “We are in the fashion business,” Mr Brunner said at a recent GigaOm conference in San Francisco. “The things that people carry and use define us almost as much as the clothes we wear#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;Wearable technology needs to understand fashion.”“我们身处时尚行业之中,”布伦纳在近日于旧金山举办的GigaOm大会上说,“我们所所携带和使用的东西对我们的影响程度,几乎与我们穿的衣一样…… A similar challenge lies in the smart home market, where devices such as the internet fridge are solutions searching for a problem. “The magic that we all love of being connected and the things that it does is going, going, gone,” Mr Brunner says. “At some point, having running water in your house was amazing. It’s no longer just about this magic, it’s about what it’s actually doing in our lives.”“我们都喜爱连通性,它就像魔术。 Dozens of new devices have emerged in recent months, from smart locks such as August and Lockitron, which open with a wave of a smartphone, to Philips’ Hue lightbulbs, which can be set to match the colour of a photo from a mobile app, as well as other features. Some are aimed at security-conscious folk: Dropcam’s 0 Pro camera constantly monitors its owner’s home, alerting them to movement after they’ve left the house and letting them watch a live feed. SmartThings sells kits that enable garage doors to be locked remotely or sends notifications to a phone when the kids get home from school. Large retailers such as Home Depot, Staples and Lowe’s are devoting more and more floor space to such products, even though it is unclear how large the market for them is today. “It takes time for people to embrace connectivity,” says Tony Fadell, chief executive of Nest, whose “learning” thermostat and app-enabled smoke alarm have attained an Apple-like cult following among early adopters of the “connected home”.Nest公司首席执行官托尼#8226;法代尔(Tony Fadell)说:“人们接受连通性是需要一些时间的。” “Most people are just jamming things together because that’s the fastest thing to do. They don’t rethink the experience from top to bottom#8201;.#8201;.#8201;.#8201;Just because it can be connected doesn’t mean it should,” he says. Ben Wood, analyst at tech consultancy CCS Insight, sees great potential in smartwatches, but says the connected home is “just too hard for the man on the street right now”. The plethora of single-purpose “point solutions” is still a long way from the joined-up vision touted at trade shows, he says. Amanda Peyton, co-founder of Grand St, a marketplace for creative technology, admits that the “independent, creative, alternative electronics” market is worth just a fraction of the tn consumer electronics market today. “But it is absolutely the fastest growing of any sector,” she says. “Over the next few years, you will see this section of the market just growing enormously. It’s going to cut into some of the existing consumer electronics market, but it’s going to grow the whole thing overall.”“但它绝对是增长最快的板块,”她说,“今后几年,你将看到这块市场呈现巨大的增长。 Wearables and other “smart” devices might not overtake the smartphone market any time soon – but they promise to be a much livelier arena for innovation in the coming years.
