The FAO says these countries are vulnerable because they suffer from chronic hunger and are forced to import food and fuel. The 22 countries particularly vulnerable to food security problems are listed in a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) prepared for a meeting next week in Rome. The U.N. food agency says these countries suffer from chronic hunger and are forced to import much of their food and fuel. FAO economist Kostas Stamoulis used Eritrea as an example, a country he said imports 100 percent of its petroleum. They have to bear the burden of high petroleum import costs," he said. "They import 80 percent of the major grains produced in the country and they were hit by the fact that prices of major grains have increased substantially," he said. In addition, Stamoulis says nearly 75 percent of Eritrea's population is undernourished. The FAO economist said all the countries on the threatened list had a higher than 30-percent hunger prevalence. Stamoulis said many of the endangered countries are in Africa. African countries from the point of view of undernourishment are the ones that are overall in the worst situation than in other regions," he added. "The continent has extremely high prevalence of hunger." The FAO will host a conference that opens next Tuesday where delegates from all over the world will discuss high food prices and the challenges to reduce food insecurity, posed in the long-term by climate change and other factors. A number of world leaders are expected to attend. The U.N. agency says the meeting will be a "historic chance" to re-launch the fight against hunger and poverty and boost agricultural production in developing countries. We are trying to attract the attention of the international community and bring people in the same venue to make decisions, outline plans, set up strategies for facing the short and long-term consequences of high food prices for food security," he explained. "This is a high level conference on challenges. And we believe that a lot of these challenges must be faced through coordinated action among countries and not in isolation." The FAO report says the conference should agree on plans to boost local food production and increase investments to stimulate production. It adds that leaders need to agree on assistance to the poor, including food subsidies and cash transfers. US Fed Chief Says Growth Depends on Stabilizing Markets伯南克:经济增长取决于稳定市场 As Congress debates President Bush's proposed bail out of the bad loans of financial institutions, central bank chief Ben Bernanke told lawmakers Wednesday that the U.S. economy risked "very serious consequences" if measures were not taken. Appearing before the Joint Economic Committee, Bernanke cautioned against reducing the size of the proposed 0 billion rescue plan constructed by the U.S. Treasury. He said the package, which Congress may vote on by the end of the week, is needed to rescue an aly weak U.S. economy. He said 0 billion, while a very big number, represents only five percent of the value of all outstanding U.S. home mortgages, which total trillion. The proposed package would aim to sell off these mortgage-related debts in the future when, the Treasury says, their value might have risen. But skeptical lawmakers from both sides said they wanted assurances that the plan would benefit ordinary American homeowners as well as Wall Street. Bernanke said the bailout, if successful, would not boost inflation and that interest rates would not rise. If it does in fact strengthen the financial markets, increase credit extension, and help the economy grow, then the Fed would perhaps have to act sooner in raising rates, than otherwise perhaps," he said. "But that would be part of the normal part of recovery." Bernanke was asked about the parallels between today's financial crisis and the earlier period of sustained economic decline in the Great Depression of the 1930s. When there are major dislocations in the financial sector, in the credit creation process, it can have significant effects on growth and employment in the economy," he said. "And that has been true not just in the ed States but in a number of countries, both emerging market and industrial countries." The Fed Chief pointed out that labor markets are weak and unemployment is high. And, he said, despite an easing of oil and gas prices, consumer spending is likely to be sluggish in the near term. In addition, slower growth around the world is likely to blunt demand for U.S. exports, which had been helping buoy the economy.

The organization is marking World Health Day with a global call to action to help countries adapt to changing climate and reduce its negative health effects. WHO Director-General Margaret Chan provides a nightmarish scenario of the future under climate change. She notes more frequent drought will threaten food security. This will increase malnutrition, which aly is responsible for 3.5 million deaths a year. She says extreme weather events such as storms and floods will sp cholera, typhoid, diarrhea and other deadly diseases. Heat waves in urban areas will increase disability and death, mainly in elderly people. Dr. Chan says vulnerable people in developing countries will be the first and the hardest hit from climate change. For example, just 12 years from now in 2020, crop yields in parts of Africa are expected to drop by half. As another example, women and young girls in parts of Asia currently spend from six to nine hours collecting water. Climate change is adding an additional set of stresses in areas that are aly fragile with marginal livelihoods and thin margins of survival." The World Health Organization says climate change will bring positive and negative health impacts. It says the affects will depend on a country's location and other factors such as rainfall, humidity, and temperature. But, it says the overwhelming impact on health will be negative. WHO Assistant Director-General for Health Security and Environment David Heymann says changing temperatures and patterns of rainfall are expected to alter the geographical distribution of insect vectors that sp infectious diseases. He says malaria and dengue are among the greatest public health concerns. Not only do these diseases occur, they then can get on airplanes or on ships and go to other parts of the world where the conditions are ripe for these diseases, where they have not been previously, but will begin transmission ... This is not itself due to climate change," he said. "But, this shows you that when climate changes do occur in one part of the world, the whole world will be at risk of climate change because of our globalized society." The World Health Organization says people in rich countries also will be affected by climate change. But, it notes the wealthier countries have better means to deal with the health risks than do the poorer countries. The World Health Organization says preventive actions are needed to respond to the increased health threats. It says it is very important to establish early warning systems and to help nations strengthen their health systems.

Matt Lauer: Though should chocolate lovers everywhere be rejoicing today, Samantha Heller is a contributing editor of Health Magazine and a clinical nutritionist at New York University Medical Center. Hey Samantha, good morning.Samantha Heller: Good morning.Matt Lauer: People tend to do the one plus one equals two, and consider thing Ok, I just heard this news and I'm going out buying a lot of chocolate. Bad idea?Samantha Heller: It's a bad idea. And the reason is that the way we process chocolate in this country , in the way we dilute with a lot of sugar and fat takes out a lot of the healthy compounds.Matt Lauer: And I am basically talking about dark chocolate that is good for you. In this country there are more people who tend to consume milk chocolate.Samantha Heller: That's right. That's diluted and it's treated to take the bitterness of dark chocolate out. And that's also taking out the healthy compound that's in it. which you can that you can take, like cocoa powder and make your own hot chocolate and you're getting some of the benefits.Matt Lauer: But you don't dispute the fact that this flavonoid seeder found in chocolate may be beneficial healthwise.Samantha Heller: It may absolutely be beneficial but what we are finding out in research is when you isolate a compound from food that's healthy in the food, it may not have the effect by itself in your body that we would anticipate.Matt Lauer: So, more research needs to be done?Samantha Heller: So much more research, yes.Matt Lauer: While we have you here, we wanna talk about some other foods in the news if you will. ( OK. ) I've been hearing so much. Really this has been in the last couple of years. Green tea. Everybody is talking about it. You've seen it in advertise. People I know have said that stop drinking coffee in the morning, I'm drinking green tea. What's the potential benefit here?Samantha Heller: Green tea is packed with polyphenols. These are chemicals that actually help fight disease , high in anti-oxidants. Green tea has been showing to be anti-carcinogenic, anti-tumorgenic and may even help prevent cavities.Matt Lauer: No caffeine? there is caffeine?Samantha Heller: There is some caffeine sure.Matt Lauer: So by switching from coffee to green tea in the morning might we be doing some, helping ourselves?Samantha Heller: You certainly might be. I don't think you will get the caffeine kick that you get from coffee, but the green tea is a great choice.Matt Lauer: Alright, we've got a couple of other things we wanna talk about. First is ginger. What's the benefit to ginger?Samantha Heller: Ginger, again, anti-nausea, anti-motion sickness. Matt Lauer: Actually a lot of pregnant women use ginger for morning sickness.Samantha Heller: Yeah. It's great for that. You can have ginger tea. It's versatile and also some of the anti-inflammatories may be good for people with arthritis.Matt Lauer: Is this turmeric or turmeric? Samantha Heller: Turmeric. It's the bright yellow spice in here. And there's a compound called curcumin which is been shown to fight cancer. It's very potent, very strong.Matt Lauer: We all know that fruits and vegetables are good for us, but you in particular wanna just mention today the cruciferous. That's the vegetables which are things like broccoli and Brussels sprouts.Samantha Heller: That's right. Now these have compounds called indoles and others that are very anti-cancergenic, protect against stomach, colorectal cancer, lung cancer and breast cancer and may help detoxify the liver disease. These are very important, very helpful.Matt Lauer: Down on the end of the table, I just wanna say here basically you say anything that comes or as a product from other animal is not good except in small amounts.Samantha Heller: That's right. And the reason is that it has artery-clogging fat, saturated fat, not good for you. But the lower, non-fat choices are good. Fat-free ice cream ,cheese, etc. Matt Lauer: And just as a way of event ending here, for years, when I was feeling that I was getting a cold, I started taking Echinacea never felt better. And now we are hearing word that perhaps I wasn't alone.Samantha Heller: Well you are not alone, but actually with Echinacea, they were looking at colds that may have effects on respiratory. We are not sure yet and there's a differenct kinds of Echinacea.Matt Lauer: Alright, Samantha Heller, thanks very much.200707/15286 Japan Extends Economic Sanctions Against North Korea日本宣布对北韩经济制裁延长半年 Japan has extended economic sanctions against North Korea, citing the reclusive country's lack of progress on an international nuclear disarmament agreement. The extension of sanctions comes as six-party nuclear talks continue to stall. Japan's economic sanctions against Pyongyang will remain in place for another six months. They were first imposed in October 2006 after North Korea infuriated the international community by testing a nuclear device. That same month it also test-fired a long-range missile. Japan's top government spokesman, Chief Cabinet Secretary Nobutaka Machimura, said North Korea has failed to fully account for all of its nuclear activities, as stipulated in an international agreement to end its nuclear program. Machimura said the sanctions are meant to demonstrate Japan's resolve to seek a comprehensive resolution of the nuclear and missile issues. He noted that Tokyo is prepared to end part or all of the sanctions if North Korea takes action to resolve those issues, and settle a long-standing abduction dispute that has prevented the two from forging diplomatic relations for decades. The six party talks on resolving the North Korea nuclear dispute has made progress, but the discussions have stalled pending North Korea's full accounting of its nuclear activities, including the plutonium that was used to power its first nuclear test blast in 2006. Pyongyang has received energy and economic aid in return for complying with disarmament steps, but has not yet complied with a declaration agreement that was due at the end of 2007. Tomohito Shinoda is a professor of politics at the International University of Japan. He says Japan is especially sensitive to the threat of North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile program because it is so close to its militaristic neighbor. Many Japanese experts believe that their nuclear weapons could be targeted to American forces in Japan," he said. In 1998, North Korea shocked the world by launching a long-range ballistic missile that flew over Japan before falling into the ocean. The ed States and Japan have been working since then to strengthen Japan's defense mechanisms in case of an attack by North Korea. A lack of progress on resolving the abduction dispute between North Korea and Japan is another reason why Tokyo is extending the sanctions. Machimura reiterated that Japan would not establish diplomatic relations until the issue is resolved. North Korea admitted in 2002 that it kidnapped 13 Japanese nationals in the 1970's and 80's to train its spies. Five have returned to Japan, and Pyongyang says the other eight are dead. Japan says North Korea must provide more information about its citizens, and says others may have been kidnapped, but Pyongyang considers the case closed.
