But here there are no cows. Bee I built a wall I’d ask to know What I was walling in or walling out, And to whom I was like to give offense? Something there is that doesn’t love a wall, That wants it down.’.... He moves in darkness as it seems to me, Not of woods only and the shade of trees. He will not go behind his father’s saying, And he likes having thought of it so well He says again, Good fences make good neighbors. 137

8Bacteria 8 Bacteria Bacteria are extremely small living things. While we measure our own sizes in inches or centimeters, bacterial size is measured in microns. One micron is a thousandth of a millimeter a pinhead is about a millimeter across. Rod-shaped bacteria are usually from two to four microns long, while rounded ones are generally one micron in diameter. Thus if you enlarged a rounded bacterium a thousand times, it would be just about the size of a pinhead. An adult human magnified by the same amount would be over a mile(1.6 kilometer) tall. Even with an ordinary microscope, you must look closely to see bacteria. Using a magnification of 0 times, one finds that bacteria are barely visible as tiny rods or dots. One cannot make out anything of their structure. Using special stains, one can see that some bacteria have attached to them wavy-looking “hairs” called flagella. Others have only one flagellum. The flagella rotate, pushing the bacteria through the water. Many bacteria lack flagella and cannot move about by their own power, while others can glide along over surfaces by some little-understood mechanism. From the bacteria point of view, the world is a very different place from what it is to humans. To a bacterium water is as thick as molasses is to us. Bacteria are so small that they are influenced by the movements of the chemical molecules around them. Bacteria under the microscope, even those with no flagella, often bounce about in the water. This is because they collide with the watery molecules and are pushed this way and that. Molecules move so rapidly that within a tenth of a second the molecules around a bacteria have all been replaced by new ones; even bacteria without flagella are thus constantly exposed to a changing environment.

例如:but,love,current,courage5.a:变?,?

Have you ever watched kids on a merry-go-round or listened to the rain slapping on the ground?Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight or gazed at the sun into the fading night?You better slow down, don't dance so fast.Time is short, the music won't last.Do you run through each day on the fly when you ask "How are you?", do you hear the reply?When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred chores running through your head?You'd better slow down, don't dance so fastTime is short, the music won't lastWhen you run so fast to get somewhere, you miss half the fun of getting there.When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened gift....Thrown away...You’re listening to Faith Radio Online-Simply to Relax, I’m Faith.Life is not a race.Do take it slower, hear the music, bee the song is over.If you have known how to compose your life, you have done a great deal more than the person who knows how to compose a book. You have done more than the one who has taken cities and empires.If you have known how to compose your life, you have done a great deal more than the person who knows how to compose a book. You have done more than the one who has taken cities and empires. 761

On Achieving SuccessWe cannot travel every path. Success must be won along one line. We must make our business the one life purpose to which every other must be subordinate.I hate a thing done by halves. If it be right, do it boldly. If it be wrong, leave it undone.The men of history were not perpetually looking into the mirror to make sure of their own size. Absorbed in their work they did it. They did it so well that the wondering world sees them to be great, and labeled them accordingly.To live with a high ideal is a successful life. It is not what one does, but what one tries to do, that makes a man strong.“Eternal vigilance,” it has been said,“is the price of liberty.” With equal truth it may be said,“Unceasing eft is the price of success.” If we do not work with our might, others will; and they will outstrip us in the race, and pluck the prize from our grasp. Success grows less and less dependent on luck and chance. Self-distrust is the cause of most of our failures. The great and indispensable help to success is character. Character is a crystallized habit, the result of training and conviction. Every character is influenced by heredity, environment and education. But these apart, if every man were not to be a great extent the architect of his own character, he would be a fatalist, and irresponsible creature of circumstances. Instead of saying that man is a creature of circumstance, it would be nearer the mark to say that man is the architect of circumstance. From the same materials one man builds palaces, another hovel. Bricks and mortar are mortar and bricks, until the architect can make them something else. The true way to gain much is never to desire to gain too much. Wise men don’t care what they can’t have. 5958

  Price of a MiracleTess was a precocious eight-year-old girl when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money. They were moving to an apartment complex next month because Daddy didn't have the money the doctor's bills and our house.Only a very costly surgery could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to loan them the money. She heard Daddy say to her tearful Mother with whispered desperation “Only a miracle can save him now.”Tess went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet. She poured all the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here mistakes. Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall's Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign above the door.She waited patiently the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Tess twisted her feet to make a noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster. No good. Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I'm talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven't seen in ages.” he said without waiting a reply to his question.“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother.” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He's really, really sick...and I want to buy a miracle.” “I beg your pardon?” said the pharmacist. “His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now.So how much does a miracle cost?” “We don't sell miracles here, little girl. I'm sorry but I can't help you.” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay it. If it isn't enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” The pharmacist's brother was a well-dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don't know.” Tess replied with her eyes welling up. “I just know he's really sick and Mommy says he needs an operation.But my Daddy can't pay it, so I want to use my money.” “How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. “One dollar and eleven cents.” Tess answered barely audibly. “And it's all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.” “Well, what a coincidence.” smiled the man.“A dollar and eleven cents—the exact price of a miracle little brothers. ” He took her money in one hand and with the other hand he grasped her mitten and said “Take me to where you live. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let's see if I have the kind of miracle you need.”That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neurosurgery. The operation was completed without charge and it wasn't long until Andrew was home again and doing well. Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place.“That surgery,” her Mom whispered, “was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost?”Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost...one dollar and eleven cents...plus the faith of a little child. 78
