New Survey Shows Most Britons Unaware of African Conflicts多数英国人不知伊战阿战以外之战 A new survey by the British Red Cross finds most Britons are unaware of major conflicts in the world, besides Iraq and Afghanistan where the British military is engaged. Less than one percent of those surveyed identified the major African conflict zones of Sudan or Somalia. When asked earlier this month by the ICM polling company, about 2,000 Britons could easily name Iraq and Afghanistan as two countries experiencing conflict, but after that it got much tougher. Nearly 20 percent could not name five other countries currently feeling the effects of conflict. Charles Antoine-Hofmann is with the British Red Cross, the humanitarian agency that commissioned the survey. That is quite a striking finding as such for us because obviously there are a large number of conflicts around the world, which are not really spoken about, which are experiencing really serious situations when it comes to civilians being affected by conflict from both direct and indirect consequences," he said. According to the International Rescue Committee, more people have died for instance in the Democratic Republic of Congo during the past decade than anywhere else in the world. The aid agency estimates that 5.4 million people have died from war-related hunger and disease since war first broke out there in 1998. Despite this, Antoine-Hoffman says awareness in Britain is extremely low. There is certainly enough evidence to show us that this is probably one of the most deadly conflicts in the world and certainly more than Afghanistan and Iraq," he noted. "That is not to minimize the brutality and seriousness of these places of course, but I think the Democratic Republic of Congo is a striking example, and there are other examples as well." As Antoine-Hoffman says, the survey is part of a new British Red Cross campaign to raise awareness about all conflict zones and the brutal impact they are having on ordinary people. Obviously the whole point is not to put any blame on the public for not knowing about these places," he said. "It is a much broader and difficult problem in terms of the role of the media in talking about these situations and also us, that is part of our exercise actually when we are launching today the Civilians in Conflict month. It is really about raising awareness on these situations in these different countries and also on the effects of conflict on civilian populations." Although the survey looked at just British views on conflict, Antoine-Hoffman suspects the same kinds of findings would probably occur elsewhere in the developed world. 200810/51426

Mr. Abbas says he will meet with Israel's Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on April 7. Earlier, Secretary Rice met with Israeli leaders and with the heads of the Israeli and Palestinian negotiating teams in Jerusalem. I would say the following; this government has done more than any previous Israeli government to bring under control settlement construction in the West Bank," said Mark Regev, Mr. Olmert's spokesman. A report from the Israeli activist group Peace Now says Israel has approved the construction of 1,700 new homes in the West Bank since last November's Annapolis, Maryland Mideast Peace conference. Meanwhile, Israeli military authorities dismantled a key checkpoint that restricted access to the West Bank city of Jericho. On Sunday Israeli authorities pledged to take down about 50 roadblocks in the West Bank and ease restrictions for some Palestinians who need to pass through Israeli-controlled territory. So I don't know if you all stayed up last night late, but we have a new Miss America this morning. She is a 22-year-old aspiring teacher, she was crowned in Las Vegas, first time the pageant was ever held outside of Atlantic City, New Jersey and here is a look at the winning moment.Miss America 2006 is Miss Oklahoma, Jennifer Berry. Miss Oklahoma, and guess what? Joining us now from Las Vegas, the new Miss America, Jennifer Berry, of Oklahoma, good morning to you, congratulations. Good morning, Kate, thank you so much. That crown looks very nice sitting up there on top of your head. Well, thank you, I don't mind wearing it. It kind of looks that you can't move your head lower. It might fall off. hahaha. . . , a little bit, a little bit, it's a little unsteady right now. I was ing that you and your sister used to actually pretend that you were Miss America that you'd(had) won the pageant, so the moment last night must have been sort of surreal for you. Very surreal, when we were little, we used to watch the pageant as a family, and um~my sister and I would, would go into tlhe utility room with our heels on, and she was the emcee, and I'd always get to be Miss America, so it, it's a very magic dream come true, and it still fight, hasn't sunken (in) yet. You always got to be Miss America , your sister never got to be? Oh yes, she's never gonna let that down, (oh~not bad.)she is like, she is like a great older sister. Especially not now, and tell us a little bit about your platform, I know that~ur you have a plan to really try to help with drunk-driving. Correct, my platform is building intolerance to drunk-driving and underage drinking, and I've worked for 5 years , in the state of Oklahoma, to diminish alcohol-related fatalities and diminish underage drinking, so now I'll be able to take that beyond the borders of Oklahoma on a national level,ur because people are still dying every single day from alcohol related fatalities, and it's just not necessary, and we need more education regarding that . Absolutely, I have to ask you about the , the venue, because this was the first time it was ever held this pageant outside of Atlantic City, what did you think of Las Vegas? It was fabulous, I've actually been to Atlanta City for ur 3 years . I attended the Miss America pageant as a member of the audience since I was able to see the venue there. Coming to Vegas has just been incredible , they have opened their arms to us, opened their hearts to us, and, just , it's been an incredible experience, I think it was a great step forward for the Miss America Organization and I will began a new tradition right here last night. Do you think that you had enough people watching last night? There has been so much talk about the moves over to Country Music Television broadcasting the event whether people are still interested, whether the pageant is still relevant? Oh, I definitely think it's still relevant, we've had more promotion, for this year's Miss America pageant than we have had in years, and I've had that strangers come up and tell me how much promotion they've seen, how much marketing they have seen. CMT has done a wonderful job with the pageant, I think it was the best union, the best decision that we could have made , for the organization, and we're definitely on our way up from now on now. Well, Jennifer Berry , Miss Oklahoma, and now, Miss America, congratulations again , thanks so much for being with us. Thank you, Kate, thanks for having me.200808/46989。

A Palestinian gunman shot and killed eight people inside the library of a rabbinical seminary in Jerusalem late Thursday. The attack comes as tensions are high in the region after a week of violence in the Gaza Strip. Witnesses say the gunman entered the library of the Merkaz Harav seminary and opened fire on about 80 people in the room who were preparing for an upcoming Jewish religious holiday. However, a statement from the ruling Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip praised the attack, saying it would not be the last. A spokesman for Israel's foreign ministry says the attack was designed to derail peace talks, but he says the talks will continue. In Washington, the U.S. State Department condemned the shooting as an "act of terror" and extended condolences to the victims' families. Mark Regev a spokesman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says terrorist attacks like the one Thursday evening do not help the peace process. As much as my country and my government wants to move forward in peace with Palestinians, Hamas and the other extremists are the greatest single problem in moving forward in peace," said Regev. "There cannot be a peace process as long as people do not stand up and oppose this sort of extremism, hatred and bloodshed." The attack comes as tensions are high in the Palestinian territories following a week of intense violence in the Gaza Strip where more than 120 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces over the past week in operations against Palestinian militants firing rockets at southern Israel. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice ended a visit to the region on Wednesday by getting moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to return to peace talks with Israel that he had suspended because of the situation in Gaza. Thursday's attack appeared to be carefully targeted. The Merkaz Harav seminary is closely linked with the Jewish settler movement in the West Bank, and many settler leaders have studied there. Witnesses say many of the students at the seminary are on active military duty and are armed, and that the attacker was killed by such a student, possibly saving the lives of many others. 200803/29101US Lawmakers Vote to Extend Sanctions Against Burma美国会推动立法加强经济制裁缅甸 U.S. lawmakers have been commenting on the situation in Burma as the U.S. Congress advanced legislation to strengthen and renew unilateral U.S. economic sanctions against the Burmese military government. The House of Representatives voted to extend U.S. trade sanctions against Burma's military government for one year, as companion legislation moved ahead in a Senate committee. Sanctions prohibiting U.S. imports from Burma were first put into place in 2003, as a U.S. response to the refusal of Burma's military go restore democracy and improve human rights conditions. In Wednesday's floor debate, Democrats and Republicans rose to support the extension, citing the Burmese military's use of force against democracy demonstrators last year, and its initial blocking of international relief aid for cyclone victims. While there can be concerns about the universal effectiveness of unilateral sanctions, Burma clearly presents a unique situation. There is overwhelming evidence that Burma continues to blatantly disregard HR (human rights) and suppress democracy and it is therefore important to continue the important ban for another yearm" said Sander Levin, a Michigan Democrat. Republican Wally Herger describes himself as a skeptic where sanctions are concerned, suggesting that the U.S. import ban does not appear to have pushed Burma's military toward democracy and greater respect for human rights. Despite this, he says U.S. sanctions must continue because the situation has been getting worse rather than better. "That said, in light of the events of the past year I believe we have no choice but to continue these sanctions, not only to remind Burma's leaders that their actions are inexcusable but also to communicate to the impoverished Burmese people that we have not abandoned their cause," he said. In addition to moving toward renewal of the U.S. import ban, Congress has acted on the Burmese JADE Act, which closes a gap relating to gem stones reaching the U.S from Burma through third countries. Approved by the Senate Tuesday after earlier House passage, that measure also makes members of Burma's ruling military government along with other military officials and family members ineligible for U.S. visas. At the same time, lawmakers stopped short of including a stronger provision that would have required the U.S. Chevron company to give up its share of the Yadana natural gas project in Burmese waters. Instead, the JADE Act contains only non-binding language urging Chevron to consider divestment from the project if the military government does not move toward democratic and other reforms. Burma also came up in a separate House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing focusing on China and the 2008 Olympics. There, Republican Dana Rohrabacher criticized Beijing for its support of Burma's military and its involvement in such places as Sudan. "Let's note, why is the dictatorship in Burma in place? Because of the dictatorship in Beijing. Burma is a vassal state of the Chinese Communist party," he said. The primary House sponsor of U.S. import ban legislation, Democrat Joseph Crowley, called Wednesday for the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN) and the European Union to do more to step up financial and other pressure on Burma's military. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice told ASEAN leaders meeting in Singapore that it is in the organization's interest to press Burmese military rulers to begin a dialogue with democracy leaders.

India has taken steps to drastically limit rice exports in a bid to cool prices and ensure sufficient food stocks for its more than one billion people. India is battling inflation and a spike in food prices. The Indian trade ministry has steeply raised the minimum prices at which all except the most expensive grades of rice can be exported. The price of rice, a staple in many Asian diets, has nearly doubled in international markets during the past three months. Farm analyst Devender Sharma, with the New Delhi-based Forum for Biotechnology and Food Security, says looming rice shortages in the world have prompted the government to virtually block exports. He says the government wants to boost local supplies in order to stabilize rising prices in the domestic market. I think the message is very obvious, because if you look at the tightening of rice position globally, Vietnam has banned exports and Thailand has imposed restrictions," he said. "India knows very well if at this juncture it allows rice exports to go, there is a clamor for rice from many developing countries. So India has ensured that its own domestic supplies are maintained." India is the world's second-largest producer of rice and a major rice exporter. But in keeping with a worldwide trend, India too is coping with a steep hike in prices of staples such as wheat, rice and lentils. Inflation last week climbed to nearly six-point-seven percent - its highest level in the past year. Spiraling food prices are the main culprit. That has prompted pledges from the government that it will do all it can to stem the rise. The government has aly banned the export of cooking oil, and cut some food import taxes to contain prices. Food prices are a politically sensitive issue in India, where poor rural and urban masses make up more than two-thirds of the country's one billion plus population. The government faces elections next year, and is concerned that runaway food prices could anger voters. Other South Asian countries are also facing a problem. Neighboring Bangladesh faces a massive hike in prices of rice after a cyclone last August wiped out half its rice harvest. Agencies like the Food and Agriculture Organization have warned that food prices will continue to climb steeply in the coming year. 200804/33029
