5.Using Social Media5. Today, it seems like the entire world lives and breathes social media. Facebook has so many users that if the website was a country, it#39;d have a population slightly larger than China. Twitter is ubiquitous among journalists. Just about every teen on Earth uses Whatsapp or Snapchat. Yet social media#39;s popularity masks a disturbing trend. Young adults and teens who use social media a lot are significantly more-likely to experience crippling depression. Of course, this is a chicken and egg thing. Are social media users depressed because they use social media, or are they turning to Facebook because they are depressed? No-one can say for sure at the moment, but researchers have their suspicions. University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine#39;s Lui yi Lin recently published one of the most wide-ranging papers on the phenomenon ever, and has identified multiple ways social media could be the cause of depression. These included young adults comparing themselves negatively to others on Facebook, indulging in procrastination, and being exposed to cyberbullying. While we#39;re on the subject… 尽管我们在谈论这一话题……4.Comparing Your Life to Others#39;4.攀比Comparing our situation to that of others has been a useful tool in human history. It#39;s why you don#39;t spend your days doffing your cap to the king – at some point in the past, someone looked at a royal and thought #39;this dude#39;s no better than me.#39;在人类历史上,我们将自身情况和其他人进行比较是很有用的方法。 Unfortunately, the modern world is forever ramming other people#39;s lives down our throats. And we don#39;t get to see a whole, or even a semi-complete, picture. Instead we see a super-sanitized version that makes everyone look like they all have the coolest lives ever. And it#39;s driving us crazy. In a world of Facebook and having to project a #39;brand image#39; of yourself 24/7, people are naturally putting all their best moments online. That almost certainly includes you. However, everyone else is then seeing these #39;best of#39; moments and assuming the rest of the world is living some fairytale dream that#39;s been denied to them. This almost certainly includes you, too. We don#39;t see our peers#39; vanishing promotion prospects, their unhappy relationships, their crushed dreams. We see their high-paying job, their loving family, their dream holiday. And we hate them for it. Worse still, we compare what we have to this impossible ideal and kind of hate ourselves, too. This #39;grass is always greener#39; anxiety has been around forever, of course. But now it#39;s punching us in the face, every hour of every day, every time we go online. And it might just be leading to a global crisis of depression.“这山望着那山高”的忧虑一直围绕在身边,这当然没什么。 3.Posting Photos Online3. Interestingly, it seems most of us are intellectually aware that our peers#39; online image is carefully cultivated, even if our gut reaction is to feel miserable seeing it. We know this because studies have shown we have a very specific reaction to people who put pictures up online of their lives and what they#39;re doing. We absolutely hate their guts. Back in 2013, a joint study by several UK universities found that #39;oversharing#39; on Facebook caused people to alienate some friends and lose others entirely. It basically comes back to what we were saying in the last point: your awesome holiday photos make your ordinary life seem like the most-amazing life ever. This inspires a gut reaction in all but your closest friends and family, who feel pangs of jealousy at your rainbows-and-unicorn-blessed life. Even though they know you#39;re crafting an image, they like you slightly-less for making them feel that way regardless. Over time, this can grow into real resentment. The irony is, those same people feeling resentful are likely posting the same photos anyway. By this point, we pretty much all do it. This creates a never-ending cycle of jealously and resentment that#39;ll probably never end. 2.Telling White Lies2. Picture the scene: your girlfriend/boyfriend/significant other has just bought a new dress/pair of skinny jeans. They try them on and ask you ;does my butt look big in this?; What do you say? If your answer was along the lines of ;no way, hot stuff! Your butt is perfect,; then congratulations. You still have a partner. But not everyone would agree you did the right thing by telling that little white lie. In fact, neuroscientist Sam Harris would argue that, by not telling the truth, you#39;re setting your partner up for a hideous fall. In his 2013 book Lying, Harris argued that white lies deny our loved ones ;access to reality.; This causes them to act on false information (like going out in a pair of tight shorts that really don#39;t fit), which can lead to negative consequences (getting openly laughed at by their peers). The bigger the white lie, or the more of them there are, the bigger the fall can be. In short, by declining to tell the truth, we might be hurting our partners and friends more than if we#39;d just admitted that their butt was a little on the large side. On the other hand, if you#39;ve just been dumped for calling your partner fat, don#39;t come crying to us. Even when telling the truth, remember a little tact is probably in order, bro. 1.Googling Information1. Today, we have all the information in the world at our fingertips. In under two minutes, every single person ing this can look up the third emperor of Rome (Caligula), the population of Luxembourg (543,202) and the weight of Mars (6.39 × 10^23 kg). Only a couple of decades ago, that knowledge would#39;ve required a trip to the local library. But there#39;s a downside to all this easy-access information. It#39;s making us stupider. Because of the easy way we can access information, our brains have stopped holding onto the stuff we look up. While in 1993, forgetting the population of Luxembourg would have required another boring afternoon at the library to get that information back, now we simply have to whip out our phones again. Our brains recognize this. Instead of storing information, we#39;re now more-likely to store where to find that information. In essence, our knowledge is just being dumped in a big, fat box in our brains marked #39;Dunno. At the same time, this flood of information is causing our attention spans to decrease. In 2000, the average attention span was a paltry 12 seconds. Now it#39;s an even-paltrier 8. It#39;s estimated that this century may see the first time that global IQ scores fall in history. We may have access to information to make us all smart, but paradoxically, it may be making us dumber. /201704/504321Many of us love the hot kick of a curry searing with chili peppers and ginger. Some can#39;t stand the burn. But spice-phobes should consider a change of heart - since new research shows these two ingredients combine to create a compound that fights cancer. The finding, from the American Chemical Society, builds on previous studies that suggested a property in chili peppers (capsaicin) fuels tumor growth. However, according to the new research, capsaicin can be turned into a cancer-fighting property when combined with ginger#39;s pungent compound 6-gingergol. Ginger has long been touted as a health food, recommended to patients for everything from a cold to a severe disease as it stimulates anti-inflammatory cells. Over several weeks, the ACS researchers fed mice prone to lung cancer either capsaicin or 6-gingerol alone, or a combination of both. During the study period, all of the mice that received only capsaicin developed lung carcinomas while only half of the mice fed 6-gingerol did. Surprisingly, an even lower percentage - only 20 per cent - of the mice given both compounds developed cancer. The researchers also dug into the potential molecular underpinnings of how the compounds interact to lead to this effect. /201609/466403This shocking footage shows around a dozen tiny children running out into the snow wearing just their pants before they throw ice cold water all over themselves. The nursery children, aged between three and six, are taking part in a daily ritual which teachers and doctors claim will keep them healthy. A paediatrician checks the children are suitable, and permission from parents is needed as the ice showers are not compulsory. But as the footage shows, most of the children taking part seem enthusiastic and appeared to enjoy their drenching, despite the cold. The youngsters get to warm up in a sauna first, before running out, many barefoot into the snow. One little boy in the footage said: ;It#39;s not cold, I feel warm.;视频中一位小男孩儿说:“天气很冷,但我很暖和。”While a girl called Alina adds: ;It#39;s exciting.;女孩艾莉娜则补充说:“这很令人兴奋!”These pictures were taken during a week when temperatures were mild for the time of year, between minus 6 celsius and minus 18 celsius. Pre-school teacher and swimming coach Oksana Kabotko, 41, told the Siberian Times: ;Children have the ice cold shower if it#39;s no colder than minus 25C.41岁的幼儿教师兼游泳教练奥克萨娜告诉《西伯利亚时报》:“气温在零下25摄氏度以上时,孩子们才会进行冰桶淋浴。”;Those children who have ice cold shower daily, not once every two weeks, come regularly to the kindergarten.“每天都进行冰桶淋浴,而不是两周才参加一次的孩子们能够定期上幼儿园。”;Of course, they can go down with some illness during the winter but it passes more quickly, after a few days at home.“当然他们冬天也会生病,但在家待几天后好得更快。”;Those who don#39;t take an ice shower may spend up to two weeks at home recovering.;“而不参加冰桶淋浴的孩子们生病后可能要花两周的时间在家康复。”She added: ;The children who do have the ice showers are also are more sensible, balanced - and optimistic. They are better organised. ;There are also some children who don#39;t go to our kindergarten but join us just for the shower.;“还有一些没上我们幼儿园的孩子也在参加冰桶淋浴活动。”Another Siberian kindergarten director, Olesya Osintseva claimed there were many cases of her young pupils going down with flu before she ordered ice showers. She said: ;There were moments when half of the children attending the kindergarten were unwell. ;It was obvious that something needed to be done to make them grow stronger and be more resilient against viruses.“很明显需要做点儿什么来让他们身体更强壮,更能抵御病毒的侵袭。”;This is how we came to the idea of boosting their immunity up by doing this exercise with buckets of chilly water outside in the cold.“因此我们想到了这个雪地冰桶挑战的活动,提高他们免疫力。”;We tested it on ourselves and our own children first, when both adults and children were first going out and splashing their feet with water, and in some months pouring cold water bucket over our heads.“我们先在自己和自己的孩子身上做试验。 ;What six months of these water exercises showed was an immediately stronger resistance to illnesses.“经过六个月的冰桶挑战活动,人们对疾病的抵抗力立即增强了。”;Our kids were now able to go to the kindergarten and even if someone had infection, they were no longer catching it.;“我们的孩子们现在可以上幼儿园,即使有孩子感染了疾病,他们也不会被传染了。” /201612/485718
