It’s been about one year since John Chen, CEO of BlackBerry, took the top job at the struggling phonemaker. Since then, he has embarked on a campaign to bring the company back to its roots and spark new innovations and partnerships where he feels necessary—in short, to make BlackBerry relevant to business users again. To that end, this week in San Francisco Chen took the stage to make a number of announcements, including a recently-inked agreement with smartphone maker Samsung Electronics. According to the deal, both companies will sell each other’s mobile security products. (A true sign of the times: Chen joked with the audience about the fact his wife still uses a Samsung Galaxy phone.) The company also announced an updated BlackBerry Enterprise server, which will allow customers to more easily manage BlackBerries and devices made by other manufacturers. Under Chen’s direction, BlackBerry’s losses are improving, but the company is still bleeding money and there is still plenty of cause for concern about its long-term prospects. Ahead of his announcements in San Francisco, Fortune caught up with Chen to hear more about his strategy—and Kim Kardashian. Fortune: What does returning to BlackBerry’s roots mean to you today?《财富》:“回到黑莓的根基”在今天对你来说意味着什么?Chen: The overall returning to the roots is much beyond the device. The Classic [an upcoming BlackBerry device that will bring back its traditional trackpad] is an important part but it’s not the only part. Very early in my career here I talked about re-pivoting back to the enterprise. It implies not only the devices but also the enterprise using our software and server as the backbone. When BlackBerry was doing well almost everyone was running on BlackBerry enterprise server. When we lost our focus we lost quite a bit of traction and accounts. But the reason I went back to the Classic is that a tremendous number of customers want it. In light of that “return to roots, ” how do you view innovation at BlackBerry? What role does it play today? The guiding principle of our development teams is that everybody is focused on the following pillars: security, privacy, productivity, and collaboration. We focus on all of those. For example, on BBM [BlackBerry Messenger] we just released the timed message feature—people call it the “Snapchat feature.” We allow people to retract messages, not just to recall them. The whole design center is really focused on security, privacy, productivity and collaboration. We’re not trying to compete on everything. Winning back developers is another aspect of returning to BlackBerry’s roots. How are you feeling about status with developer ecosystem? There are only a handful of apps, like Facebook, that we build native. We are relying on our relationship with Amazon for the others. Everything that appears on Amazon’s app store you can run on BB10 [the latest version of BlackBerry’s operating system]. In doing so we free up our enterprise developer community to focus on developer platforms. On that front the re-pivoting is only six to nine months old since I came in. We have some good traction but still a lot of work to be done. /201411/343918Early signs show that bigger iPhones are aly leading to bigger sales for Apple. The company on Monday said that early orders for the new iPhones — the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus — topped four million in the first 24 hours that they became available for order online over the weekend. That is double the number of early orders that came in for the iPhone 5 when it first went on sale online two years ago. Both new iPhones unveiled last week are significantly larger than previous models. The iPhone 6 screen measures 4.7 inches diagonally and the iPhone 6 Plus screen measures 5.5 inches. The earlier iPhone 5S had a four-inch screen. The new phones arrive in stores on Friday. By increasing the screen size of the iPhone, Apple was responding to a broad market trend: Consumers, especially those in China, are gravitating toward bigger and bigger screens on smartphones, just as they did with televisions. Some financial analysts are optimistic that the early orders will amount to record-breaking iPhone sales over all. Maynard Um, an analyst for Wells Fargo, said that Apple was on track to meet expectations for sales of millions in the “low teens” range in the first weekend. That would be much higher than the nine million in first-weekend sales last year for the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C. It can be easy to lose perspective on what those numbers mean. For comparison, Motorola Mobility shipped 6.5 million smartphones in the first three months of the year. Apple’s iPhones are expected to sell at least double that number in just their first weekend in stores. Toni Sacconaghi, a financial analyst for Sanford C. Bernstein, said that although the recently introduced Apple Watch and mobile payments service may create new revenue streams for Apple, the company’s financial situation remains fundamentally unchanged: Its financial earnings still lean heavily on sales of the iPhone, which accounts for about 70 percent of Apple’s profit. Still, it remains unclear, Mr. Sacconaghi said in an email, whether the new iPhones will ultimately help the company’s profits. “Can Apple sustain iPhone margins in the face of higher costs on both new phones (larger screen, battery, more memory, better processor, etc.) and a price increase on only the larger offering?” he said.“这两款新手机成本提高了(屏幕更大、电池更大、存储量更大、处理器更好,等等),而只有较大型号的价格提高了。 /201409/329201I met Pooja Sankar two years ago after she founded Piazza, a collaboration platform that facilitates class discussion among students and teachers. Starting with a few students at Stanford, Piazza now is used at top universities such as Stanford and Princeton and MIT and in 25 countries around the world. With .5 million in funding from Sequoia Capital and Bessemer Ventures, Sankar, 32, aspires to play a key role in the transformation of education. But before other entrepreneurs get too revolutionary in this field, she thinks we need to reassess technology#39;s role in education. Following an epiphany at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Sankar shares her view in this Guest Post. As the founder and CEO of Piazza, I#39;m used to cheerleading for technology in higher education. But in the midst of an almost utopian optimism about online education that I witnessed in Davos, I found myself playing an unaccustomed role: gadfly. And since returning from Davos, I#39;ve distilled my heresies to this: Education is a personal journey, and right now we#39;re offering students an online jumble. I rode into Davos on a spouse#39;s pass, and I#39;m not to the manner born. I came of age in interior India, where for seven years I didn#39;t talk to a single boy outside my family. Many girls in my town were married off by their parents at 16, some of them barely literate. The reason I got out? My father, an educated man, demanded that I study. He painted a picture of a life that was different from the one I could see just beyond the wall that separated our home from the street. Without that guidance, I would never have gone to IIT, Indian Institute of Technology. At a session in Davos, Salesforce.com (CRM) CEO Marc Benioff and Sean Parker of Facebook (FB) and Napster fame hosted a roundtable focused on the question, ;What#39;s one global change you#39;d want to see?; Our panel focused on education, and all agreed that online courses showed great potential. The words ;disrupt; and ;revolutionize; were spoken solemnly and often. Then someone asked me -- as the person at the table least removed from the proverbial mud hut -- whether online education would have broadened my childhood horizons. I had to answer, ;No.; What was really most important in my education was that at key moments, I was able to envision to the next step. And usually I did it with the help of a mentor, or at least someone who#39;d taken that next step before I had. The journey was personal, but guided. And that, more than access to any particular class or bit of educational content, was what saved me from the fate of early marriage and poverty that befell so many others. In the wealthy world, we have an oddly romantic view of students in the global south: If we can just put educational stuff in front of them, they#39;ll devour just as they would eat food if we airdropped it in during a famine. That#39;s the dream. The reality is: If online education is going to change outcomes on a global scale, we must think more broadly about students#39; actual needs. We need to think about their entire educational journey, not just the content or the classes we provide. First, the plan. Imagine a child in Africa trying to cobble together an educational plan out of a series of online courses. It#39;s impossible. Consider that Harvard and MIT have pledged million for online education. In addition to building online classes, some of that money should go toward helping students make iterative plans for their education, with help from advisory staff or current students. Who better than Harvard and MIT to help students around the world put together educational plans? Second, the peer group. If students don#39;t have peers struggling with the same material at the same time, they#39;re likely to feel alienated and hopeless. At Piazza, we see spontaneous peer group formation every time we run large online classes. Online educational software must become more social and immediate and fun. Imagine what a gift it would be to a girl in rural India to connect with other girls studying the same material in other parts of the world. Third. the mentors. Last fall, I helped create WitsOn, an online community connecting 500 professional women with thousands of college students. Students asked the women questions about how they had managed their lives and careers. Interestingly, we saw many of the professionals eagerly learning from the students, many of whom were more accomplished than they were in certain facets of technology. This suggests a giant network of learners, with mentors and mentees learning simultaneously. I#39;m a big fan of learning online. But we aren#39;t being ambitious enough. If children in the developed world fall off the educational track, giving them computers is not going to help most of them. Education is more than lectures, assignments, and exams. It#39;s a means to envision a different life from the one you#39;re living. Let#39;s give every student a shot at that. /201302/226614

Given all the buzz, you#39;d think an iWatch from Apple would be a case of ;when; rather than ;if.; In theory, such a device could push computing forward. Users could check messages and get alerts and directions without having to whip out their iPhones. (And Dick Tracy would be spinning in his grave.) Here#39;s our quick list of features we#39;d like to see find their way into the still mythical device. Device pairing. Apple (AAPL) was recently granted a patent for a technology that would allow the two-way transmission of data between a portable media device and an accessory. While most Apple patents never see reality, this one opens the door to a watch that pairs with an iPhone so users could say, view messages, calendar events, Facebook (FB) notifications, or get turn-by-turn directions. Accelerometer. Imagine what an accelerometer would enable the iWatch to do. Given popular bracelets like Jawbone#39;s Up and the Nike+ (NKE) Fuel Band, the iWatch could also be a similar health device, keeping track of things like steps taken and calories burned. Curved display. Another patent Apple filed in 2011 reveals the company is working on a flexible screen wrist band with a touch-sensitive curved display ;across a portion of the wearable device where the flexible display overlaps itself.; Sure, it#39;d be an aesthetic thing, but a curved high-resolution display would be -- for lack of a better word -- hot. Rechargeable battery. Chances are an iWatch wouldn#39;t run for long on conventional watch batteries, so we hope Apple finds a way to make it rechargeable via Lightning cord or even partly by wrist movements like today#39;s kinetic watches. Equally as important: at least a full-day of battery life in between charges. All kinds of sizes. In this case, one size might not fit all. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster wrote recently that a wearable computer could prove more popular with men than women if designed on the larger or chunkier side. ;It is less likely women will embrace them given women#39;s watches tend to be smaller with a greater emphasis on fashion,; explained Munster. Whether or not that#39;s true, Munster sort of has a point: The iWatch may have to come in different flavors to cater to different people. A phone is one thing. But something you strap to your wrist? That#39;s a sartorial statement. What do you think? What would you like to see in the iWatch? /201303/228212
