Why is it so unrewarding for politicians to bash the rich in America? Jul 7th 2011 | from the print editionTHE corporate jet gets a lousy press. In the James Bond classic, “Goldfinger”, the eponymous villain is sucked out of the window of just such an aircraft. In 2008 the bosses of Detroit’s moribund car companies did themselves no favours when they flew in their gleaming jets to Washington, DC, to beg Congress for bail-outs (they drove the next time). And in his present face-off with the Republicans over the federal debt ceiling, Barack Obama is bashing the jets again, because to the man in the street the corporate jet is a perfect proxy for a fat cat. “I’ve said to Republican leaders, you go talk to your constituents and ask them, ‘Are you willing to compromise your kids’ safety so some corporate-jet owner can get a tax break?’.” “我已经对共和党领导人说过,你去问问你的选民们这样一个问题:‘你们愿意用孩子的安全作为代价来换取某些私人飞机的主人减税吗?’”Needless to say, Mr Obama is now accused by the aircraft manufacturers of scapegoating a successful industry that employs more than a million Americans and by the Republicans of launching a populist “class war”. But this raises a question. If an authentic populist movement exists in the ed States today, it is not composed of impoverished class warriors braying to squeeze the rich until their pips squeak. It is the tea-party movement, whose crusade to slash taxes and pare government to the bone far outweighs whatever distaste it might feel towards those magnificent fat cats in their flying machines. Why is bashing the rich such an unpopular form of populism in America? The normal answer falls back on culture. Bill Galston of the Brookings Institution notes that Americans are repelled by the notion of inequality in worth or status. That men are created equal is, after all, “self-evident”. They are, however, far less perturbed by unequal wealth, a form of inequality that is the inevitable product of the free-market system in which most still profess an abiding faith. According to Tom Smith, director of the Centre for the Study of Politics and Society at the University of Chicago, surveys still show Americans to be more sympathetic than Europeans to the idea that unequal pay encourages people to work hard, for example, and less sympathetic to the idea that governments should try to smooth such inequalities out. 201107/144258崇明去除眉间纹手术价格 Severe drought hits China Drought conditions badly affects the nations wheat producing regions. CNN's John Vause explains. With no rain here in Beijing, and across many central and northern provinces, officials say many parts of the country are now in the grips of the worst drought in five decades. Rainfall has been up to ninety percent below normal, leaving more than four million people without drinking water so to two million livestock. But as you say, the biggest concern is for this winter wheat harvest, in some parts, the crop is almost half, almost half of the crop products are now being threatened by this drought.Frequent co-steps too have not helped the situation, we are talking about an area of 24 million acres of farmland, the hardest hit regions, could see their crop yields fall by 20% this year according to one expert. Add to that problem, 20 million migrant workers, who are now without a job, many have returned from the city to their family farms. They were hoping to work the land until the economy improved, but now that may not be an option, because there’s not enough water for irrigation. There is also concern about a blow to farm incomes which will be another hit to this economy which has aly been struggling with the collapse in exports. The government has declared a Category One Emergency. There could be some relief coming over the weekend. Weather forecasters predict some rainfall in some of the hardest hit regions over the next few days. Andrew?John, half the crop, half the wheat crop potentially under threat, what can the government do apart from pray for rain.Well, this Category One Emergency gives an access to transportation facilities, like railways and also to airlines and that kind of things to move an aid around as needs, it also frees up a lot of money to help farmers in those regions. There’s also this strategic Grain Reserve which the government won’t tell us or won’t release figures on how much is being held there. But last year, for example, China had a bumper grain harvest more than 500 million tons, almost half of that was bought up by the government. They keep part of that in this Gain Reserve for these types of emergencies, but you have to keep in mind that China, since 2003, has been a net grain importer. So any hit to this winter wheat harvest will almost likely be felt around the world.VOCABULARY1. winter wheat 冬小麦 2. crop yields 作物产量 谷物收获量3. apart from 远离, 除... 缓冲器 缓冲 6. keep in mind prep.

A haunting vision of Haruki Murakami’s “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle”村上春树《奇鸟行状录》萦绕于人心的影像Aug 27th 2011 | EDINBURGH | from the print edition ADAPTING a novel for the stage requires courage, vision and a spirit that refuses to kowtow to the original author. But few novels can have been as hard to rework as “The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle”, Haruki Murakami’s surreal and unwieldy 600-page exploration of fear. Stephen Earnhart’s adaptation (written with Greg Pierce), seven years in the making, had its world premiere at the Edinburgh festival on August 21st. Like a dream, it is wondrous, incomprehensible and poignantly memorable in all sorts of unexpected ways. First published in English in 1997, this Japanese novel was immediately hailed as a masterpiece, despite its fierce resistance to explanation. Mr Earnhart, a former producer for Miramax Films, has applied some cinematic flourishes to this production, which often recalls the bizarre cinema of David Lynch. The novel’s hallucinatory world is evoked through film projections, puppets and music. The mood is haunting and confusing, and peppered with bewitching details, like a white bird that suddenly flutters from bedsheets and flies away. In Australia, it’s not just livestock hit hard by draught, but the next generation of farmers. At 24, Robert Watt, a farmer from Alectown, a region of Australia, has had seven seasons on the farm, but not one year of profit. He says the draught, plus a sharp spike in farming costs, has left a generational hole on farms.“A lot of my mates have gone off farm, off farms and get the quick buck at the mine. And it's not usually by, by choices. It's...they're forced to, cos, uh, when they make a living, yeah.”He says most young people have considered selling out, and explains that the prospect of not earning any money could eventually push him to leave as well.“The only reason I would leave the land is the finance, the pressure of not being able to get a wage at the end of the week and do what you like with it.”Robert has joined other young farmers at a meeting in Sydney recently, to work out ways to get more people back on the land. And some say farm finance is the key. Sam Gunn, the chairman of the Young Farmers’ Committee, says that encouraging young people to get the “first farm buyers” grant is important to help them get back into farming.“And we’re just saying that, you know, people getting back and that encouraging young people back into farming if they get that first farm buyers grant, I really think it would be a step in the right direction to getting people back on the land.”The farmers who stay on the land face new challenges. They have to manage with less rain, and decide which crops suit the changing conditions. Robert also says there is potential in agriculture to make some money, but external conditions such as the weather are elements that can’t be anticipated and controlled.“Yeah, there’s definitely potential in agriculture. The, the, the price of the commodity at the moment is quite, quite good. It just depends if, if the weather comes our direction and we can crack a crop and some, some decent seasons for the livestock as well, we could, we can make a bit of money. It’s obviously out of our control.” A spike in: a sudden large increase in the number or rate of somethingLeave a hole (on) in: to use a large part of an amount of money, food etcGet the quick buck: to make some money quicklyBy choice: If you do something by choice, you do it because you want to do it and not because you are forced to do itWork out: to find a solution forDecent: proper, satisfactory200812/59404上海中山医院做丰胸手术价格

The gathering was the latest multi-national effort to contain fallout from a credit crunch that has sparked market meltdowns and threatened worldwide economic growth. While European leaders gathered in France, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund continued consultations in Washington, where G-Seven finance ministers met late last week. Although the meeting generated no concrete, immediate actions by the world's top industrialized nations, participants pledged close cooperation to rescue distressed banks, prevent bankruptcies and assure that credit flows resume. Recent weeks have seen nations employ more aggressive measures to prop up financial institutions, ease tight credit, and reassure panicky investors. Now, the Bush administration is proposing the federal government invest directly in troubled U.S. banks, which would constitute a partial-nationalization of America's banking sector. Several European countries have aly undertaken similar initiatives. Former Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers says strengthening the banking system is vital. The stock market is merely the sideshow in this circus," said Summers. "It is the banking system that has to be put back together, and it has got to be put back together fast." Summers was speaking on A's This Week program. Last week saw most major stock markets fall by a record 20 percent or more. Only concrete, coordinated action by governments around the world can stop the slide, according to the head of the Washington-based Institute for International Economics, Fred Bergsten. We are in the midst of a crisis of confidence. The financial markets are near panic. They need reassuring steps from the governments and the central banks," said Bergsten. "The governments and central banks need to take a series of very specific measures to get the credit markets functioning again, to get the banks lending again, to get the economy moving forward again. We need those decisions in the next day or two to get confidence back on track." Bergsten was speaking on CBS' Face the Nation. The worldwide credit crunch began in the ed States, which has weathered a wave of home foreclosures after a prolonged period of lax lending standards that saw millions of Americans acquire mortgages they could not afford. In recent weeks, the financial contagion has sp to Europe, Asia, and scores of developing nations. To combat the problem, the Bush administration has propped up and taken over failing U.S. financial institutions, championed a massive government rescue package, and tried to make it easier for businesses to finance short term needs. A growing consensus among economists and government officials holds that while individual nations must take steps on their own, only coordinated global efforts can stem the crisis. 200810/52705 Gum boots designed with a blast to charge mobile phonesModern festival-goers who d ending up with a dead mobile phone battery after days stuck in a muddy field with no electric plug power points may now have a solution -- power boots.Mobile phone company European Telco Orange has introduced a phone charging prototype -- a set of thermoelectric gumboots or Wellington boots with a 'power generating sole' that converts heat from the wearer's feet into electrical power to charge battery-powered hand-helds.The boot was designed by Dave Pain, managing director at GotWind, a renewable energy company.Pain said the boot uses the Seebeck effect, named after physicist Thomas Johann Seebeck, in which a circuit made of two dissimilar metals conducts electricity if the two places where they connect are held at different temperatures. "In the sole of the Wellington boot there's a thermocouple and if you apply heat to one side of the thermocouple and cold to the other side it generates an electrical charge," Pain said."That electrical charge we then pass through to a battery which you'll find in the heel of the boot for storage of the electrical power for later use to charge your mobile phone."These thermocouples are connected electrically, forming an array of multiple thermocouples (thermopile). They are then sandwiched between two thin ceramic wafers. When the heat from the foot is applied on the top side of the ceramic wafer and cold is applied on the opposite side, from the cold of the ground, electricity is generated. After a full day's festivalfrolics music lovers can plug their phone into the power output at the top of the welly and use the energy generated throughout the day to charge their phone. But the prototype boot does have one drawback. You need to walk for 12 hours in the boots to generate one hour's worth of charge.Vocabulary:thermoelectric: of, pertaining to, or involving the direct relationship between heat and electricity(热电的)frolics:嬉戏;狂欢welly: Wellington boot(威灵顿长筒靴;及膝胶靴)背单词 — 装英语词汇201007/108031上海丰胸哪家医院好上海复旦大学附属华东医院去痘印多少钱
