WQ:Donny! Donny:Wow, you got the latest iPhone? How do you like it?WQ:很喜欢啊! Donny:Thats right. But dont worry. Everyone has to start out as a newbie.WQ:我需要有个人指点我一下, give me...eh....give me....Donny:A few pointers?WQ:没错,就是这个词。pointer is spelled p-o-i-n-t-e-r, pointer I need someone to give me a few pointers on how to find the coolest iPhone apps. Donny:I have an iPhone. I can show you the ropes.WQ:你就有iPhone? You can show me the ropes. Donny:You guessed right! To show someone the ropes means to explain to someone how to do a job or activity.WQ:可是,这跟 rope 绳子又有什么关系呢?Donny:A long time ago sailors had to learn how to control the ropes to set sail. Learning the ropes was a beginners lesson for sailors. So to show someone the ropes means to show someone the basics of doing something.WQ:我明白了,以前新水手第一个要学会的就是如何操控绳子。所以,to show someone the ropes 就是教导新手做某件事情。Donny:Yup! OK, now lets see what youve learned today.WQ:第一,菜鸟叫 newbie;第二,指点某人是 to give somebody a few pointers;第三,教初学者做某事可以说 to show someone the ropes! /201305/238908

Todd: Miki, when you were in college where did you live? Miki: My first year I lived in the dormitory that was quite close to the campus. It was about a five minute walks so it was very convenient but Im not sure that that many people actually enjoyed living in the dormitory because there were so many of us packed into such a small space that one did not get a sense of privacy at all. I shared a room with two other girls and 24 hours a day there was always someone near you, next door, down the hall if not in your own room, and a very small space. In Japan perhaps this wouldnt have been such a large problem because the sense of personal space and privacy perhaps isnt as strong growing up, but really in the ed States if you grow up with you own room, if you grow up with your own sense of self and if, you know, you have personal space that you define just instinctively which, you know, maybe three feet in front of you, a meter, or if you have your own personal room itself, its very difficult to move from that sort of sense of individuality and personal private space, to move into the dorms, and to have to share, all of that, and then always have a smile on your face, if you dont want to be considered a bitch. Todd: Yeah, so what about food? What did you eat for food? Did you have a kitchen? Did you cook? Miki: In the dormitories, no! We had a dining hall. I dont quite remember what it was called, but it was a common area where everyone went downstairs at the same time. It was only open, three hours in the morning, 3 hours in the evening, and we all shared our time together, kind of like a family, I suppose, and we must have eaten just normal American food. I dont remember. Todd: Yeah! Yeah! How about your laundry? How would you wash your clothes? Miki: That I forget! I think we had laundry machines every other floor in the dorm building. But I actually dont remember. Sorry! Todd: And what would students do for fun? for socializing? Miki: Oh, I think the bigger question is whether students did anything besides socialize, you know, right, I mean, if youre a freshman the chances of you actually doing work are actually quite small, especially in that sort of a social setting where,美琪:我想更大的问题是学生们除了社交活动还有什么活动,你知道,我的意思是,如果你是大一新生,那你实际上学习的机会非常小,尤其是在那些社交场合……Todd: Even at Beckley? Miki: Oh, are you kidding me? Yes! Berkley is highly competitive but its also highly, its a highly social atmosphere, especially in the dorms, well, and then once you move into a communal area, if youre there with your friend, then I dont think a whole lot of studying goes on. Todd: Wow! Thats funny! Oh, thanks! Miki: Surely! 我们晚上要去吃饭,do you want to come along? 。。没钱!Donny:Hmm? Didnt you just got a new job? Donny:hmm, 月光族可以说 live from paycheck to paycheck。Yanglin:live from paycheck to paycheck?Donny:对,paycheck is spelled p-a-y-c-h-e-c-k。 Yanglin:这么说来,我可真是 live from paycheck to paycheck! Donny:You can say:My vacation in Hawaii broke the bank.YL:我懂了,Break the bank 就是形容某件东西特别贵。 We cant afford this purse, it will break the bank. 你还可以说,this purse will max out my credit card. Max out somebodys credit card, Did you ever max out your credit card?Donny:Me? I would never do that! Now lets see what youve learned today!Yanglin:第一:月光族的生活方式叫 live from paycheck to paycheck; 第二,非常昂贵可以说 break the bank;第三,刷爆信用卡,叫 max out somebodys credit card. /201305/237648
