I was born exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo. I estimate that about 200, 000 other babies were also born that day. I dont know whether any of them was later interested in astronomy. My first memory is of Isobel pushing a rather antiquated.我最初的记忆是伊泽贝尔 推着老旧的carriage-built pram along North Road with Stephen and Mary in it sort of looking very large马车改装的婴儿车在北方大道上走着 史蒂芬和玛丽在车内 看上去非常大because they had large heads and pink cheeks, and they were very noticeable. They all looked different from ordinary people. I can remember visiting the Hawking home oh, several times. It was the sort of place where, if invited to stay to supper.如果留下来吃晚饭的话you might, uh...be allowed to have your conversation with Stephen.你可以 可以和小史蒂芬说说话but the rest of the family would be sitting at the table ing a book但是其他家庭成员会坐在 桌边阅读a behavior which was not really approved of in my circle, but which was tolerated from the Hawkings在我的观念里这样做是不允许的 但是霍金一家却很宽容because they were recognized to be very eccentric, highly intelligent, very clever people, but still a bit odd. My impression of the Hawking family was that they were all like that except for Stephen, who seemed to be the only normal member of the family. Stephen used to reckon he knew, I think it was 11 ways of getting into the house, and I could only find ten.

The previous emperor, Caligula, was assassinated.Claudius could be next. The best way for an emperor to win over the public:Build. One of the largest engineering projects in the empire:An mighty aqueduct. To carry water to the city,为了把水输送到城市Roman engineers carve a route through 45 miles of countryside. They tunneled through mountains, they bridged across valleys,他们在山中通隧道 在山谷间搭桥they built these vast structures他们建造了这些宏大的建筑物across huge amounts of space without dynamite,跨越了巨大的空间 没有炸药without any kind of modern tools,没有任何现代的工具and yet theyre so well built that 1500 years after the end of the civilization,那些建筑被建造得如此出色 以至于在罗马文明消亡后的1500年those structures are still standing. The aqueduct is powered by gravity. It needs to drop one foot every 300. Too steep, and the water will overflow. Precision engineering. The secret to Roman construction:罗马建筑的奥秘在于A revolutionary new building material. Easy to mould, it sets rock hard.Concrete.

Its got a squashed nose, bulging eyes, small horns, and abundant whiskers. In fact, the face looks like a cross between a Chinese dragon and a Pekingese dog, and not friendly at all! It looks a bit like an oriental gargoyle, and that is pretty well what it was.It would have had a similar position to a gargoyle, high up on a temple or a grand house. The features of the face when you look at them closely are pretty rough, and its obvious that its been made by pushing the wet clay into a fairly simple mould. This is clearly a mass-produced object. But that is why its so interesting, because this is just one of tens of thousands designed to cover roofs that would once have been thatched, but in prosperous Silla Korea, were tiled with objects like this. Why did the Silla want to build such a grand capital, and why did they need so many new houses? The city of Kyongju was based on the Chinese capital Changan, which was at the time the biggest city in the world, and Kyongju developed hugely once Silla had unified the Korean peninsula, or most of it. A lot of the aristocrats from the kingdoms which were defeated by Silla had to come and live in Kyongju, and they had magnificent houses with tiled roofs. And this was a new thing, to have tiled roofs, so this tile would have been a sort of status symbol for them.;庆州是模仿中国的首都长安建造的。 201510/404001
