It is the stuff of the Hollywood movie Inception: a dreamworld that can be manipulated at will. In fact, for more and more of us, it is becoming a reality, with the number of people experiencing lucid dreams rising rapidly. Someone having a lucid dream realizes they are dreaming and may from then on in "direct" the action. Alternatively, they may simply "watch" the dream unfold. And while the description may seem bizarre, the process is far from alien to many of us. Studies suggest that the number of people in the Western world experiencing the occasional lucid dream has risen by between 10 and 40 percent since the 1980s. Today, they are so common that about one in eight of us will have one in our lives. Despite this, little is known about what triggers them - or what is behind the rise. Mark Blagrove, a psychologist who runs a sleep laboratory at the University of Swansea, said that "people's abilities during dreaming are altering" as they become more adept at recognizing they are able to control their dreams. He also thinks that dreaming may help us back up our memories. Research carried out at the respected Harvard University in the US showed the brain to be hard at work during lucid dreams. In fact, the level of mental activity in some parts of the brain was similar to that of an awake person. /201004/102553Perfume in a pill? "Swallowable fragrance "capsule promises to turn sweat into scent. Pills for insomnia, pills for pain, pills for stress: They're all two-to-a-penny. But a new capsule promises to deliver perfume directly into the body, turning the skin into an "atomiser." Swallowable Perfume, currently in its development phase, is said to work with the natural processes of metabolism, releasing fragrant molecules through the skin's surface during perspiration. Essentially, the pill claims to turn perspiration into a fragrance - and because we are all genetically unique, our scented sweat will take on an individual characteristic, too. The artist behind the unlikely idea is Netherlands-based Lucy McCrae. She writes on her site: "Swallowable Perfume is a digestible scented capsule that emits a unique odor through your own perspiration." The magical-sounding perfume tablets are still very much on the drawing board, with no product launch date yet planned.

Staying single may shorten life spanStaying single all your life may not be good for your health. That's the conclusion of new research that shows that people who never marry face an even greater chance of dying early than people who have been divorced, separated or widowed. All of these groups had shorter survival prospects than people who were currently married. The effect held true across all age groups, even younger ones, the researchers noted."This seems to happenall the way along," said lead researcher Robert Kaplan, professor of the department of health services at the University of California, School of Public Health. His team published the findings in the September issue of the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.Previous research had found a connection between being married and a longer life expectancy and, more specifically, between being married and a lower incidence of heart disease. Marriage is considered a rough proxy for "social connectedness," which experts believe can help people live longer. Most of these studies, however, haven't distinguished between people who are separated, divorced or widowed and those who have never been married."We're getting at never-married people," Kaplan said. "That hasn't been looked at as much."The authors argued that widowed and divorced people are more likely to have children and are thus more likely to be socially connected. Never-married people would not have these benefits. Vocabulary:all the way along:
